Modern Concept of Social Work
Modern critical social work emerged in the late 1800’s and has continued to be shaped and
altered until present day (Healy, 2014). Although each social work perspective contains
differences, Healy (2014, p.185) has identified three common discourses that unite the modern
critical social work perspectives.
1: Firstly, she identifies the dedication of social work professionals to work collaboratively with
populations who are oppressed (as cited in Leonard, 1994)
.2: Secondly, modern critical social work perspectives recognize power differentials that occur
within all relationships, especially the relationship between social workers and service users
3: Thirdly, these perspectives acknowledge broader systems’ influence on both individuals and
social workers.
Function of Modern Social work
1: Curative
2: Preventive
3: Rehabilitive
Curative:-
Medical and health services, psychiatric services, child counselling,
child welfare services, and services for the handicapped or disabled in the form of
protection and rehabilitation are among the services given under curative duties. These
services are aimed at curing persons medical, social, material and social illness.
For Example:
Helping a girl who engages in prostitution for a living to change her ways through
counseling relationship and effecting necessary changes in her home or environmental
conditions.
Preventive:- Prevention in social care is about encouraging people to be more proactive
about their health and wellbeing. It can increase independence and reduce or delay the
need for care and support services.
It covers services like as life insurance, public assistance, social legislation, adult
education, and disease prevention, among others. This sort of function mostly deals with
services linked to the prevention of issues such as insecurity, illegality,
ignorance, and illness, among others. It aims to eliminate those aspects of the social
environment or personality flaws that prohibit an individual from attaining a
minimum acceptable standard of socioeconomic life.
Rehabilitive:-
The social workers will be responsible for doing a thorough assessment
of each patient's needs and problems. The social worker and the patient will jointly draw
up an individual treatment plan addressing the patient's specific needs.
Rehabilitative aspect tries to put back the person to a normal or healthy state of social
functioning. This aspect could involve helping her avail herself of opportunities for
schooling, skills training, and legitimate employment.
