Renewable Vs Nonrenewable Assignment

The document provides instructions for a group research assignment on renewable and non-renewable energy resources. Students will be split into groups to research and present on one renewable and one non-renewable resource. For each resource, they must describe its origin, how it is converted to electricity, advantages and disadvantages, its usage in Canada compared to other resources and worldwide, and their opinion on human usage of that resource. Students will fill out a table during peer presentations and include it with a completed rubric when submitting the assignment.

Renewable vs. Non-Renewable Energy Resources

Research Assignment
Your task is to get in groups of 3 or 4 and select and research two
Nonrenewable Renewable
energy resources each (one renewable and one non-renewable).
You and your group members must choose different resources to Oil Hydro (water) power
research.
Coal Passive Solar
You will then make a slides presentation on your resources that you
will share with your other group members. Natural gas Active Solar

The presentation should consist of a thorough description of each Nuclear Wind

resource by answering the questions below. Biomass
You must choose one resource from each category. Geothermal
Non-renewable Resource Tidal
• What is a non-renewable energy resource
• What is the original source of the energy? (Where does it come from/How is it “made” by nature?)
• How is this energy source converted into electricity? (A picture or diagram can be particularly helpful in
addressing this question)
• State at least two advantages of using this resource.
• State at least two disadvantages of using this resource.
• How can this energy source be managed so that we don’t run out of it?
• Use a graph to display the amount this resource is used in Canada to produce electricity in comparison to
other resources
• Use a graph to display how much this resource is used for electricity in Canada to how much the rest of the
world uses this resource.
• What do YOU think? Do humans use too much of this resource? Not enough? Or is our usage exactly what
you think it should be? Support your answer with details that you discovered as you researched your
resources.
