BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Studying a language like English is an adventure. You will discover many things as you
read, view and write to develop your communicative skills. Though at times it may seem like some
topics and techniques may be easy to understand, there will be moments that you will be mystified
by some ideas before you learn them.
This lesson will equip you with a deeper understanding of the meaning of research by
organizing your ideas and get topics based from the given resources. Here are some simple steps
on how to make a research:

 Don’t rely exclusively on net resources. When given an assignment, students must not
rely only on the internet. Library resources can also be used in looking for information.
 Narrow your research topic before logging on. Be specific on the topic and simplify it
to limit your search.
 Know your subject directories and search engines. Since internet can overwhelm
students with a lot of links on various websites, browsing each link would only cost of the

2
time and could be a futile exercise. So make sure of the subject directories and search
engines you will use to make an easy and fast gathering of information.
 Keep a detailed record of sites you visit and the sites you use. Use your pen and
paper to keep track of the sites you visits and the sites you think are very useful. Relying
on browser’s history function is not good for it retains the web addresses or URLs of all
the sites you visit. Your record can help you if you want to revisit the sites you visit and
will direct you correctly to them.
 Double-check all URLs that you put in your paper. Type the internet addresses in the
location box of your browser and double-check if they take you to the correct site. If you
got mistakes in typing the addresses, your references will become useless.

REMEMBER
RESEARCH is said to have come from the word “recherché” which means “to seek”.
As the term implies the prefix “re” in research means “again and again”, “once
more”’ or “anew”. Research is a diligent, scientific and a thorough investigation,
observation and study about a certain subject. It may involve a lot of information
discovery and reference-gathering, yet, research does not stop there. It also involves collecting
of information, organizing it in a certain way of presentation to others, referencing statements
properly and most importantly interpreting all the information we rummaged over.

4
PURPOSES OF RESEARCH:

Research enhances your linguistic competence.

Through research you will be introduced to more studies related to the topic. You are
to brave numerous books, browse internet and have to face several readings. As you continue to
discover more literature and articles, your linguistic abilities will be enhanced

Research gives you in-depth knowledge.

In research, you will find that learning is not only available inside the classroom. Learning
is available anywhere especially if you want to find out answers to the questions formed in your
mind.

Research gives you the opportunity to contribute to the society.

Through research, you will discover even the slightest truths that are not seen by most
people. The end of the research is to contribute to the society in order to improve the quality of
life. It helps us participate in nation-building and progress-making for the development of the
society. In addition, without research development would never be possible
