Week 3&4 Basic Tech Js 2 Notes

This document provides a lesson on plane figures for students in JSS 2. It defines a plane figure as a flat, closed shape and lists examples such as circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, and ellipses. Methods for constructing triangles and rectangles are shown. Formulas for calculating the areas of regular plane figures like triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, and trapezoids are also presented.

SECOND TERM LESSON NOTE

SUBJECT: BASIC TECHNOLOGY

CLASS: JSS 2
TOPIC: PLANE FIGURES.
A plane figure is a figure that is flat and closed. A plane can be made of straight lines, or both straight
and curved lines.
EXAMPLES OF PLANE FIGURE/SHAPES:
1. Circle
2. Rectangle.
3. Square.
4. Triangle.
5. Pentagon.
6. Semi-circle.
7. Quadrant.
8. Ellipse.

CONSTRUCTION OF PLANE FIGURES- TRIANGLES

1. Draw horizontal line AB.
2. With centre A, and a radius equal to the length of the triangle, strike an arc.
3. With centre B, and the same radius, strike another arc to cut the previous one at C.
4. Join CA and CB to obtain the triangle ABC.

AREAS OF REGULAR PLANE FIGURES

1. Area of triangle = ½ base x height.
2. Area of rectangle = L x B.
3. Area of square = L x L.
4. Area of parallelogram = B x H.
5. Area of circle = 22/7 x radius x radius (πr2).
6. Area of trapezium = ½ x sum of parallel sides x h (1/2 (a + b)h.
