CIVE 4302 Concrete Design Assignment

This document provides details for Assignment #5 for the CIVE 4302 Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete Design course at Carleton University. The assignment asks students to: 1) Calculate prestress losses at different stages for a simply supported post-tensioned bridge girder. 2) Check concrete stresses at mid-span under service loads. 3) Calculate the factored moment capacity of the girder cross-section at mid-span. 4) Design transverse reinforcement 1500mm from the left support to resist a torsional moment of 110kN-m. 5) Determine the limiting tendon profile to ensure concrete stresses do not exceed allowable limits.

CIVE 4302 (Fall 2013) November 27, 2013

CARLETON UNIVERSITY
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
CIVE 4302 – Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete Design (Fall 2013)

ASSIGNMENT #5
(Due Date: December 12, 2013)
Question:
A two-lane simply supported post-tensioned bridge girder has an unshored span of 18 m, centre
to centre, of bearings. It is subjected to an unfactored uniform superimposed dead load of 5 kN/m
resulted from a non-composite bridge deck, as well as an unfactored uniform live load of 18
kN/m due to traffic. The girder is prestressed by fourteen 12.7 mm diameter (Aps=98.7 mm2 for
each strand) 270-K grade 7-wire stress-relieved strands using only one jack. The tendons are
grouted when the girder goes under full service load. The strands are harped, and the eccentricity
at midpan is 430 mm and at the end 70 mm.

f py = 0.85 f pu
f pi = 0.7 f pu
f pu = 1860 MPa
E ps = 200000 MPa
Ag = 36 × 10 4 mm 2
I g = 522 × 10 8 mm 4
f ' c = 45MPa
f ' ci = 40 MPa
A ps = 1382mm 2
γ concrete = 2400kg / m 3

Part (I): 30%

Compute the pre-stress losses at the following different stages:

Stage I: At transfer (18 hours after tensioning the strands);

Stage II: Transfer to placement of non-composite bridge deck (when the SDL is applied 35 days after
casting the concrete);

Stage III: At end of two years when full service load is applied

Assume that shrinkage strain is 210x10 mm/mm. Use the wobble friction loss coefficient of k = 0.0004
and curvature friction loss coefficient of µ = 0.17. The anchorage slip is 2.5 mm.

Part (II): 20%

For the mid-span section, check if the stresses in concrete are within the allowable limits required by CSA
A23.3-04 in service conditions. Use the loss calculations obtained in part (I).

Part (III): 20%

Calculate the factored moment capacity of the given cross section at mid-span using strain-compatibility
analysis, as well as the CSA A23.3-04 procedure (Cl.18.6.2a) if applicable. Use the loss calculations
obtained in part (I).

Part (IV): 30%

Design the required transverse reinforcement (Av+t/s) at 1500 mm away from the left support, assuming
the beam being subjected to a constant torsional moment of 110 kN-m. Use the general method of CSA
A23.3-04.

The typical stress-strain relationship of 7-wire 270-K pre-stressing strand is given to be as below:

Bonus Question: 20%

Determine the limiting envelope for the tendon location such that the limiting concrete fiber stresses are at
no time exceeded the allowable limits required by CSA A23.3-04. (Hint: consider the beam ends, quarter-
span, and mid-span as the controlling sections).
