A procedure is a document that describes how a process needs to be done, including

responsibilities, specific tools, methods and measurements1. To write a procedure for an IATF
system, you need to follow these steps:

 Identify the process that the procedure will cover. It should be related to one of the
requirements of IATF 16949, such as customer satisfaction, design and development,
production control, etc.2
 Define the purpose, scope, and objectives of the procedure. Explain why the procedure is
needed, what it applies to, and what it aims to achieve.
 Determine the inputs, outputs, and resources of the process. List the materials,
information, equipment, and personnel that are involved in the process.
 Describe the activities and tasks that need to be performed in the process. Use clear and
concise language, and avoid unnecessary details. Use flowcharts, diagrams, or tables to
illustrate the process flow if possible.
 Assign roles and responsibilities to the people who will execute the process. Specify who
is accountable, responsible, consulted, and informed for each activity or task.
 Define the performance indicators and criteria for the process. Establish how the process
will be monitored, measured, evaluated, and improved. Include the frequency, methods,
and records of the process performance.
 Review and approve the procedure. Ensure that the procedure is consistent with the IATF
16949 requirements, the quality policy, and the quality manual. Get feedback from the
process owners, operators, and customers. Obtain the approval from the top management
or the authorized person.
 Communicate and implement the procedure. Make the procedure available and accessible
to the relevant people. Provide training and guidance on how to follow the procedure.
Ensure that the procedure is followed and maintained.
