ASSIGNMENT -2
From Chapter # 3
1. A 1⁄2’’ X 6’’ plate of A36 steel is used as a tension member. It is connected to a gusset
plate with four 5⁄8-inch-diameter bolts as shown in Figure-1. Assume that the effective
net area Ae equals the actual net area An. What is the design strength for LRFD?

2. A single-angle tension member, an L 31⁄2 X 31⁄2 X 3⁄8, is connected to a gusset plate with
7⁄8-inch-diameter bolts as shown in Figure 2. A36 steel is used. The service loads are
(40+A) kips dead load and (10+2A) kips live load, where A=Last Digit of Your Student ID.
Investigate this member for compliance with the AISC Specification. Assume that the
effective net area is 85% of the computed net area. Use LRFD method.

II. Net Area
III. Shear Lag
IV. Yielding in Gross area
V. Fracture in Net area
4. A tension member with a length of 6 feet must resist a service dead load of (20+A) kips
and a service live load of (50+A) kips, where A=Last Digit of Your Student ID. Select a
member with a rectangular cross section Use A36 steel and assume a connection with
one line of 7⁄8-inch-diameter bolts.
5. What is the slenderness effect of tension member? How it can be formulated? What is
maximum slenderness ratio according to AISC?
From Chapter # 4
6. What is the slenderness effect of compression member? How it can be formulated? What
is maximum slenderness ratio of compression member according to AISC?
7. What is local stability? When local buckling occurs? Write the formula to determine local
buckling of w shape member.
8. A W14 X 74 of A992 steel has a length of 22 feet and pinned ends. Compute the design
compressive strength for LRFD. Investigate the column for local stability.
9. Compute the available strength of the compression member of W14 X 74 of A992 with
the aid of (a) Table 4-1 from Part 4 of the Manual and (b) the column stress table (Table-
4-22).
10. A compression member is subjected to service loads of (150+A) kips dead load and
(530+A) kips live load, where A=Last Digit of Your Student ID. The member is 24 feet long
and pinned at each end. Use A992 and select a W14 shape.
11. Select the lightest W-shape that can resist a service dead load of (62+A) kips and a service
live load of (120+A) kips, where A=Last Digit of Your Student ID. The effective length is 22
feet. Use ASTM A992 steel.
12. Select a W18 shape of A992 steel that can resist a service dead load of (120+A) kips and a
service live load of (300+A) kips, where A=Last Digit of Your Student ID. The effective
length, Lc, is 26 feet.
