Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are positioned across the entire facility in the event of a fire. Only if it is safe to do so ensure that you select the
correct extinguisher for the type of fire. The below guidance material will assist in checking the extinguisher and using the
extinguisher;
Chemical Spill Response
Procedure that must be followed;
Contact the Site Manager immediately
The Site Manager in consultation with the National WHS Manager will
determine if emergency services Ph: 000 and the VIC environmental
protection authority (EPA) are required to be notified
The site manager will consider the immediate danger to persons and
ensure where required persons are evacuated from the premises until
emergency services arrive on site
If it is safe to do so use the spill kit to contain and clean up the chemical
and dispose of the waste according to safety data sheet and EPA legislative
requirements Note: ensure the relevant PPE is worn according to the SDS
Important
Do not touch any harmful substance. Take precautions to protect yourself
from harm!
Evacuate persons not involved in containing the spill
Isolate contaminated individuals and treat as per the SDS
Only if it is safe to do so use the spill kit to contain and clean up the
chemical Note: ensure the correct PPE is worn according to the SDS
Where applicable close doors to prevent further contamination
Secure the area to keep non-emergency response personnel away from
danger
Assist emergency services and supply the SDS if the chemical/s are known
In conjunction with expert assistance from emergency services, minimise
the spread of contamination
Decontaminate equipment, clothing and personnel, including any victims,
on site if necessary
Dispose of contaminated equipment and materials as per the SDS
Enter the chemical spill into Solv and conduct the investigation to establish
the root cause
The site manager will contact the supplier to top up the spill kit with
supply’s.
MANDATORY
PPE
To access site,
you must wear

footwear.
FORKLIFT EXCLUSION ZONE
Where no defined walkway or driver standing zone is available, the pedestrian
must maintain a 3 metre exclusion zone from any operational
forklift.
Pedestrians must maintain eye contact with the forklift operator at all times.
Pedestrians must NOT enter a shipping container when a forklift is inside and
running.

Maintain 3 Points of contact
1 Ensure the step surfaces are free of mud and debris and are
not damaged.
2 Don’t use the wheel hubs as a step surface.
Don’t climb down with something in your hand. Note:
3 Leave it on the forklift floor and retrieve it after getting
safely on the ground.
4 Don’t rush to climb out.
Check the ground surface for uneven surfaces or trip
5 hazards
6 Always face the forklift when climbing in and out.
7 Descend slowly to avoid straining a muscle.
8 Always maintain three points of contact at all times.
TRUCK DRIVER SAFE ZONES
When tautliner trucks are being loaded the truck
drivers are to stay next to the truck cab and maintain
a minimum of 3 metres from the counter balance
forklifts.
When container trucks are being loaded the truck
drivers must either stay in the cab or in the driver
safe zone.
Opening Container Doors
1) Before opening the container doors ensure that the corner casting safety flags are
positioned on the container.
2) Attach a safety door buckle strap on both doors in case the freight has shifted
in transit.
3) Only open one door at a time in case the freight has shifted in transit Note: if
the freight has shifted you must report this to the supervisor immediately.
Position the leverage bar onto the container door handle.
4) Turn the handle to the centre of the door Note: repeat for both doors.
Safe Manual Handling
1 When manual handling always first check if the item
requires 2 persons Note: if yes ask for assistance
2 Bend your knees
3 Keep the item being lifted close to the midline of your body
4 Always maintain a straight back (the natural curvature of
your back)
Racking
1 Ensure all pallets are plastic wrapped before being placed
into the racking
2 Refer to the weight distribution signage displayed at the end
of each racking
Do not overload the racking bays!

4 Report all damaged racking to your supervisor!

While on site under the Work Health and Safety Act you have a responsibility

affected by your acts or omissions.

and safety of personnel.
