Roman Mythology

Roman mythology encompasses a set of traditional stories centered on ancient origins and
religious inclinations of the Roman Empire. These myths represented the core of their literature
and visual arts and had an important social purpose since they reflected politics and proposed
moral values. Roman mythology has many similarities to Greek mythology. Many of the heroes
and gods from Roman mythology were the same as the Greek gods such as Hercules.

Examples
• "HERCULES AND THE HYDRA" (1475) BY ANTONIO POLLAIOLO
Hercules and the Hydra, which was produced in 1475. This painting shows that Hercules fighting
another invincible creature; it is Hydra this time. Hydra is a snake-like monster that has multiple
heads. It has deadly poison, and those multiple heads can regenerate once it gets slayed off.

• THE FEAST OF VENUS BY PETER PAUL RUBENS, 1636/1637


- The miraculous Feast of Venus is a Roman Mythology painting by the most celebrated Flemish
artist Peter Paul Rubens. It was Created Between 1636-1637. The Feast of Venus is a painting
that depicts a gathering of various gods and goddesses with the main attention focusing on
Venus.

JUDEO-CHRISTIAN TRADITION
The term Judeo-Christian is used to group Christianity and Judaism together, either in reference
to Christianity's derivation from Judaism, Christianity's borrowing of Jewish Scripture to
constitute the "Old Testament" of the Christian Bible.

THE ANNUNCIATION BY JAN VAN EYCK, 1434-1436
This painting dates between c. 1434-1436 and was painted by Jan van Eyck. This painting was
also painted by using oil on canvas and could be from the Netherlands.

CHRIST TEACHING AT CAPERNAUM BY MAURYCY GOTTLIEB, 1878-1879


This was painted with oil on a canvas. This painting showed Christ preaching in the synagogues
at Capernaum, surrounded by his followers. This painting also showed the combination of
Judaism and Christianity. We see that it relates to Judaism, because of the traditional clothes
that he and everyone else is wearing in the painting. Also by how he looks like an orthodox Jew
in the synagogue. Christianity is also portrayed in this painting, by the artist putting a halo
