Importance of Barangay Elections in the Philippines

The Philippine constitution was at stake due to the multiple extensions of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections. “A good training ground”

The Philippine constitution is at stake and the concern about the barangay and the Sanguniang Kabataan
elections extended for two years followed by an extension of a year and a half, the barangay and
Sangguniang Kabataan successfully commenced on October 30, 2023. The Supreme Court of the
Philippines stated that “…the free and meaningful exercise of the right to vote, as protected and
guaranteed by the Constitution, requires the holding of genuine periodic elections which must be held
at intervals which are not unduly long, and which ensure that the authority of government continues
to be based on the free expression of the will of electors.” Based on the Supreme Court ruling the right
to suffrage is very important and it is the biggest and most sacred duty one can ever have in this
democratic country, the fact that it underwent several challenges made by some of the people driven by
political motives.

After all the proceedings taken cognizance just for the fulfillment of this election, it is a sign that in a
democratic country, we see individuals as an asset giving the utmost value and genuine respect. As a
law-abiding citizen the only thing to give back to the nation is to make sure that our cast votes will make
sure not to go to someone underserving, those who are incompetent, and unqualified for such a certain
position. As our obligation to vote, it is necessary to register first in the Comelec because it is
disheartening the moment the election takes place when so many are qualified of the positions but are
failed due to the earned votes. In the Sangguniang Kabataan it becomes a successive politics where in
fact, it is just but not a usual flow in the political landscape as it usually occurs after running in any of the
SK positions they eventually run for the higher position, registering votes to have a good and qualified
barangay and SK officials and to have a chain of goodness in public service.

The Sangguniang Kabataan is a good training ground for the future of the politics. In a statement of Rex
Laudiangco the Comelec spoke person said “For SK officials aspiring to become better leaders and to
serve, the SK is indeed a good training ground” it is necessary to consider the other view such as the
negative if there is no proper training during SK term how much more in the succeeding terms, it is clear
now that to have a good and better governance it starts from below. Over 1.4 millions candidates those
who are “craving” for positive change and development have filed certificates of candidacy for the BSKE
from the source, visioning that there will be one person to alleviate this one nation.

Furthermore, the degree of something useful for the common good or even better depends in each of
the people, each of the voter. To have a desire for a brighter future, from the threat of the constitution
as it extend the BSKE several times, the election is vital and at the same time critical in ensuring the
needs of the people, register, critically examine the candidate, research the candidate and pray. These
are all what the majority need. Let us do our part to have a brighter and brightest future ahead.
