Primavera Socks

The Primavera Socks pattern produces a spring-like pattern separated by purl stitch columns, making the design pop out. The alternating knit and purl stitches make the socks stretchy and snug-fitting. The pattern uses increases and decreases every 6 rounds to create its effect in an easy to memorize way. Materials include a solid or gradient wool and nylon yarn and needles. Directions cover casting on, knitting the cuff and leg in pattern, making the heel flap and turning it, adding gussets, continuing the foot pattern, toe decreases and grafting the toe.

Primavera Socks

A combination of increases and decreases

produces a beautiful, spring-y pattern, sepa-
rated by columns of purl stitches, which make
the pattern pop out. The alternating knit and
purl columns make these socks stretchy and
snug-fitting. This is also a perfect pattern for
those of you who don’t like holes in their
socks. Plus, it’s very simple and easy to me-
morize – the increases and decreases are knit
th
only every 6 round! You probably won’t have
to look at the chart after the first repeat.

Materials:

• 1 skein (100g) of Zitron Trekking XXL (75% New Wool, 25% Nylon; yardage: 2 oz ½ =
459 yards / 100g = 420m), col. 107. You can also try 4-ply Regia, Opal, Meilenweit or
Jawoll yarns. The pattern will work best with solid, nearly solid, or gradient colorways.

• 1 set of five US 1½ / 2.5mm double pointed needles or the size needed to obtain the
gauge

• tapestry needle (for grafting the toe and weaving in the ends)

Gauge: 35 sts / 47 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:

st(s) = stitch(es) m1R = make one stitch using strand

rd(s) = round(s) between two stitches as follows: Insert left
RS = right side needle, from back to front, under strand of
WS = wrong side yarn which runs between last stitch on left
k = knit needle and first stitch on right needle; knit
p = purl this stitch through front loop.
k2tog = knit 2 sts together
p2tog = purl 2 sts together m1L = make one stitch using strand
p3tog = purl 3 sts together between two stitches as follows: Insert left
s1 = slip one stitch (as if to purl) needle, from front to back, under strand of
ssk = slip 2 stitches as if to knit, then knit yarn which runs between last stitch on left
those 2 stitches together needle and first stitch on right needle; knit
this stitch through back loop.

Tip: If you have trouble visualizing the different m1 increases, have a look at these video

Tip: You can adjust this pattern for a different size and/or gauge by adding or eliminating
stitches in each purl column (6 sts total per round).

Directions:

Using long tail cast on cast on 66 sts. Divide sts between four needles and join in the round,
being careful not to twist.

Cuff: Work [k1, p1] for 15 rds (1.25” / 3cm)

Leg: Follow the chart for 14 pattern repeats (or as long as you like), ending with round 5.

Heel: The heel flap is worked over 33 sts (needle 1 + 4). The following instructions are for the
French/Round heel (flap heel), but you can work any heel of your choice.

Heel flap:
Row 1 [RS]: k all stitches, turn work.
Row 2 [WS]: k2, p29, k2, turn work.
Repeat these 2 rows 15 times more, ending with row 2 (wrong
side). Turn work.

Turn heel:
Row 1 [RS]: k20, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 2 [WS]: s1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 3 [RS]: s1, k9, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 4 [WS]: s1, p 10, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 5 [RS]: s1, k11, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 6 [WS]: s1, p12, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 7 [RS]: s1, k13, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 8 [WS]: s1, p14, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 9 [RS]: s1, k15, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 10 [WS]: s1, p16, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 11 [RS]: s1, k17, ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 12 [WS]: s1, p18, p2tog, p1, turn work. [21 heel sts]
next row: s1, k20
Gusset: Pick up and knit 16 sts along side edge of heel flap and 1 st in space between top of
heel flap and held instep sts. Work instep sts (needles 2 + 3) in established pattern. Pick up and
knit 1 st in space between top of heel flap and held instep sts, then pick up and knit 16 sts along
side edge of heel flap; knit to end of the round. [88 sts]

Gusset decreases:
Rd 1: needle 1: knit to last 3 sts of needle 1, k2tog, k1; work in pattern to end of needle 3;
needle 4: k1, ssk, k to end.
Rd 2: needles 1 and 4: k (work the stitches of needles 3 and 4 in established pattern).
Repeat these 2 rounds until 64 sts remain.

Foot:
Continue working in pattern as set for as many repeats as needed (approx. until the small toe),
ending with round 5.

Toe decreases:
Rd 1: k to last 4 sts on needle 1, k2tog, k2; k2, ssk, k to end of
needle 2; k to last 4 sts on needle 3, k2tog, k2; k2, ssk, k to end
of needle 4.
Rd 2: k
Repeat these 2 rounds until 20 sts remain (5 sts on each needle).

Using needle 4, k to end of needle 1. Slip sts from needle 2 to

needle 3. Graft sts on needle 3 to sts on needle 4 (instructions for
grafting can be found here:

Finishing:
Weave in ends.
