UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

EXERCISE 1.3.1 A

1. In terms of your physical features, who do you resemble more your father or mother? How do
you say so?
- For me, I'm more like my father because we have more similarities in our physical features. My
father and I are the same height, same shoe size, same skin color, same color of hair, and the
rest.

2. In terms of temperament or disposition (quiet/loud, jolly/serious, impulsive/conscientious), who

do you take after your father or mother? Explain your answer.
- In terms of temperament and disposition I am more like my father. I'm a quiet person when I'm
not comfortable with the people I'm with. I'm jolly when I'm with people who are important and
special to me. Besides, I also make impulsive decisions without thinking about the outcome.

3. Based on your answers to the preceding questions, do you think that when you reach you
dominant parent’s age, you will also be like him or her? Why or why not?
- Maybe I'll have something in common with them when I'm their age. Like my father's quietness,
maybe I won't lose it until I grow old. But I guess I won't be sad all the time. Perhaps, like my
mother, I am easily irritated. I get angry easily when someone does something wrong to me.
EXERCISE 1.3.2 A

STATEMENT Agree Disagree

1. I believe everyone has control over their lives. /
2. I believe that we cannot be conditioned by society. /
3. I believe that we are fully aware of our behaviors. /
4. I think all people are good. /
5. I believe that everyone can be saint. /

Rank the following social institutions according to what you value the most (1) to the one you value the
least (5). Explain your ranking below.

4 technology

5 government

2 church

1 family

3 school

Because everything revolves around the family unit, I rate it first. Without it, nothing else mattered.
Religion is as important as family, but it is not as important without the family structure. I respect
everyone's faith, therefore I put it second.
School is my second most important value. School is very important to me since it is where I may
improve my talents
Also, for the fourth position, I chose technology since, in today's environment, technological
advancement is crucial to survival.
A government institution is placed last for a reason: it is a human-created institution with all of the
difficulties that come with humans seeking power and control over others' lives.
EXERCISE 1.3.2 B

Instructions: If the majority of your answers in the first activity are agree, then you may have a
humanistic orientation. If you disagree with the majority of the items, then you might be behavioristic.
Find two of your classmates who have the same orientation and discuss why you agree or disagree
with the statements. Cite personal experiences that support your orientation.

- Based on my response, I believe I am one of those humanistic individuals. I believe

every person has their own set of ideals and perceptions about themselves. I believe myself to
be an adult, and I am aware of my talents, habits, and so on. And I believe that everyone is like
that, or that some are simply in denial about themselves. For example, when I'm going to make
a decision, I know what I'm doing and the implications of my action, and I need to do it in
order to develop and learn things from my actions. I believe we are all capable of great things;
we simply need to take action from time to time.

Also with your group, discuss your ranking in the next exercise and come up with a group
ranking of these institutions according to your valuation. Explain your answers below.

ASSIGNMENT 3:

1. List down three things that you significantly learned from the readings.
 There are several possibilities for such an occurrence. The replicating nucleotide sequence
(hereinafter referred to as "replicators") only needs to reproduce the portion of its physical
structure required to generate new replicators. That is, replicator A may simply copy its
molecular machinery, allowing the replication products, B and C, to replicate themselves.

 Psychology developed as a discipline from a branch of philosophy concerned with the

knowledge of the mind. William James described psychology in Principles of Psychology
(1890) as the study of mental life, which encompasses feelings, wants, reasoning, cognition,
and so on.
 The reason for this return of awareness was not the abandoning of behaviorism, but rather
the relaxation of the stringent limits set on the research of observable behavior by the early
behaviorists.

2. List down three things that are still unclear to you.

 This school of psychology was critical in modernizing the study of human feeling and
perception.
 Objects are perceived by our thoughts as parts of a larger total and as components of more
sophisticated systems.
 Gestalt psychology is a school of thinking that examines the entire human mind and
behavior. Gestalt psychology says that we do not focus on every minor detail while
attempting to make sense of the world around us.

3. List down three questions that you want to ask about the readings.

 What exactly are the three Gestalt principles?

 Which of the following does not fall under the purview of a gestalt principle?
 Which of the following do you not consider to be perception principles?
