How2 TechSKills

This document provides guidance on how to write up technical skills for a project. It lists three questions that should be answered when writing up a skill: 1) How the skill is important and used in industry, 2) How the skill will be used in the user's project, and 3) A description of the technical process with visual references. An example write up is provided for the technical skill of UV unwrapping that addresses each question and includes a visual texture map example.

HOW 2

WRITE UP
TECHNICAL SKILLS

Writing up skills you have learnt is an essential part of any project. Use this guide to help you
write up your technical skills. Some of the more basic skills taught on the course may have there
own write up guide. Look in the Technical Skills section of your course on iSite.

Below you will find three questions you should try to answer when doing a skills write up.
Alongside these questions you will find an example of the kind of things you could write.

1: WHY IS THIS TECHNIQUE IMPORTANT AND HOW IS IT USED IN THE INDUSTRY?

EXAMPLE WRITE UP
Technical Skill: Unwrapping
Industry use:
Unwrapping is an essential skill for creating both 3D models for TV & Film, as
well as for games where a UV map is created so that colours can be applied to
the model. A UV map is the flat representation of the surface of a 3D model used
to easily wrap textures or images. The process of creating a UV map is called UV
unwrapping.

2: HOW WILL YOU UTILISE THIS SKILL OR TECHNIQUE IN THE PRODUCTION

OF YOUR PROJECT?

EXAMPLE WRITE UP
Technical Skill: Unwrapping
How it will help in my project:
This is a skill I will utilise in all my game projects as 3D models used in games
have to be unwrapped, in order for texture maps such as normal maps to be
applied. It is also essential for the game engine to create light maps. Alongside
this it is also essential so that not every aspect of a 3D model has to be sculpted.
Effects such as indents and surface textures can be created from texture maps
if the model has a UV unwrap. In this particular project I will need to unwrap the
Mandalorian Helmet so that I can add symbols and decals to the correct places
as well as weathering effects.
3: Describe the technique with visual references to show the process used

EXAMPLE WRITE UP
Technical Skill: Unwrapping

The technical process:

The process of creating a UV map is relatively simple.
Inside of Autodesk Maya you create a seamless UV
map and then cut the seams in order to split up the
parts in to separate shapes called UV Shells. (See
texture map example). These can then be laid out on
the texture map and exported ready to have colours or
effects applied in Photoshop.

4: Make sure you add visual examples of the technique in use like the example
below.
