Practice problems 6

1. A second order instrument is subjected to sinusoidal input. The undamped natural

frequency is 30Hz and damping ratio is 0.25. calculate the amplitude ratio and the phase
angle for an input frequency of 5Hz.
2. A second order pressure transducer has a natural frequency of 50Hz, damping ratio of 𝜉 =
1.0𝜇𝑉
0.1 and static sensitivity of 𝐾 = 𝑃𝑎
. determine the output for a step pr. Input of 1bar.
3. A second order pressure transducer has an undamped natural frequency 𝜔𝑛 =1000 rad/s,
damping ratio 𝜉 = 0.3 and static sensitivity 𝐾 = 0.02𝑉/𝑏𝑎𝑟. A pressure pulse as shown in
Fig. P3 is applied. Obtain the frequency response of the input signal and output voltage.

4. A first order element of an instrument relates the output and input voltages 𝑉0 and Vi
respectively by (1 + 𝜏𝐷)𝑉0 = 𝑉𝑖 (𝑡) with 𝜏 = 0.2𝑠. If the mean spectral density 𝑆𝑖 of the
input is approximated as shown in Fig. P4, find the RMS values of the output and input
signals.
5. A second order system has undamped natural frequency ω𝑛 = 1000𝐻𝑧, damping ratio ξ =
0.2 and the static sensitivity 𝐾 = 10𝑚𝑉/𝑚𝑚. Find a compensating system such that ξ is
increased to 0.7.
6. A measuring element with a time constant of 0.4s and a static sensitivity of 0.05mV/0C is
used to measure the temperature of a medium, which changes from 200C to 600C. Taking
the output to be zero at 200C,
a. Find the time taken for the output to reach 80% of the steady state value, if the
temperature change occurs suddenly.
b. The output voltage at the end of 5s, if the temperature change from 200C to 600C
occurs at a constant rate in 5s.
c. Suggest a method for reducing the time constant to 0.1s
7. A velocity transducer with a resistance of 1000Ω generates 5mV/(cm/s). The output of the
transducer is fed to an R-C circuit with R=1MΩ and C=0.1μF. Find the amplitude and phase
of the voltage across R relative to the input motion to the transducer, the amplitude of
motion being 0.5mm and frequency=10Hz.
8. In a response test, a thermometer, was suddenly put in a water bath kept at 1000C. The
following data were obtained.
