Pharmacy Ethics Case Study

This case evaluation summarizes the care of a 61-year-old male patient with COPD who was admitted for an exacerbation. The patient was on Spiriva but needed combination therapy according to guidelines. There was an ethical dilemma as the pharmacist recommended the guideline-directed therapy of LAMA, LABA, and ICS, but the physician had only prescribed Spiriva. The pharmacist communicated with the physician and discussed changing the therapy. They resolved the dilemma by referring to guidelines and the physician prescribing Symbicort in addition to Spiriva, providing the recommended combination therapy.
