○● What's up, Young Innovators!
● Welcome to the another episode of The ABE's Podium together with the Agricultural and
Biosystems Engineering Sophomores!
○ For today's video, we are going to tackle about one of the most amazing machineries that has ever
been invented in the vast history. This is the...
○● Electric Motors
● On this episode, we will tackle about the Electric Motors by its uses, definition, brief history, and
we will make a simple model of an Electric Motor and we will discuss its concept and how does it
really work.
* * *
○ Its a hot season again in Maguindanao, and one way to beat the heat that we all know are by the
usage of electric fans.
● With this convenient technology, have you ever wondered the mechanisms of an electric fan?
○ An electric fan works with the help of an electric motor. When we switch it ON, electric current
passes through the coil of wires, thus produces rotational motion in the hub. This rotates the blades
attached to the hub and the slightly angled blades of a fan turn counterclockwise to move air down.
Cool air descends from the ceiling and circulates in the room because of the fan.
● But the power of electric motors doesn't limit only with the electric fans.
○ It is evident EVERYWHERE. From washing machines, mixers, blenders, refrigerators, water pumps
and many, many more!
● So what are Electric Motors actually? When you think of a motor, you may immediately think of a
car, but you actually encounter other motors in your home every day. Electric Motors are devices
that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, usually in the form of rotational motion. In
simple terms, they are devices that use electric power to generate motive power.
○ Did you know that during 1834 the first ever Electric Motor was invented?
History was made when Thomas Davenport of Vermont invented the first official battery-powered
electric motor in 1834. This was the first electric motor that had enough power to perform a task and
his invention was used to power a small-scale printing press.
● To fully comprehend the concept of Electric Motor, let's jump to the best and fun part.
○● At this juncture, nwe are here in the Techno Building of MSU-MAGUINDANAO to create a simple
model of an Electric Motor.
●○ Let the learnings begin. Let's go! (both)
(TECHNO BUILDING)
○ Here are the following materials that we will need:
Materials:
• Marker
• 2 batteries (preferably with high voltage)
• Copper Wire
• Insulated or Cable Wire ( for positive and negative charges)
• 2 Paper Clips
• Electrical Tape
• Clay
• Ring Magnet
• Scissors
• Flat Wood Board
• Shoe's Glue
○ Precaution: Do not rush. Work safely. If you are underage, please ask an adult for assistance.
● Now let's get started.
○ First, starting in the center of the wire, wrap the wire tightly and neatly around the marker 30
times.
● After that, we can now slid off the coiled wire from the marker.
○ Wrap each loose end of the wire around the coil a few times to hold it together, then point the
wires away from the loop, just like this:
● With the help of a hobby knife or a pair of scissors, remove the top-half of the wire insulation on
each free end of the coil. The exposed wire should be facing the same direction on both sides.
○ Next, we will create the Rig assembly. We will remove first the coatings of paper aand we will
posture them on these set up. We will attach the paper clips with the use of electrical tape or
staples on the wood board.
● Cut a satisfactory length of insulated wire. Use scissors to remove a small portion of plastic
insulation from both ends of your Insulated Wire. Wrap the exposed end of Insulated Wire around
one of your Paper Clip shelves.
○ Attach the wires onto the board with a Shoe's glue or a tape just like this. Attach the ends of your
exposed insulated wires to the ends of the battery. Use electrical tape to secure the wires to the ends
of the battery. You may use a modelling clay to prevent the batteries from rolling away.
● Place the ring magnet right in the middle of the paper clips.
○ Place the Copper Wire Coil onto the clips and give it a spin.
● If your Copper Coil does not continue spinning you may need to sand the ends of the Copper Coil
better or you may need to adjust the Coil to be more balanced. You may need to adjust your Paper
Clip Shelves to place the Coil closer to the Magnet. Adjustment while testing is the key to creating a
proper working Motor. Do not give up, keep trying till it works.
○ Now let's discuss its principle.
○ Why wrap the copper wire in a circular loop? The main idea is that an electric current makes a
magnetic field. You can increase the strength of this magnetic field by increasing the current or by
making multiple loops. Since we want a simple motor, more loops is the way to go!
● If the current had passed into the wire coil just like we did after we connect the coil through the
wires of the battery, we are creating an electromagnetic field, which pushes the coil away from the
magnet. Meaning, there's a force, therefore, there is a motion. While we spin the coil, since one part
of the wire is insulated, we are ssimply breaking the circuit for a sudden, so the coil continues to
rotate using its momentum.
○ If the circuit continues again, the magnetic field will repel the coil, causing it to spin again.
● Are you fully absorbed? Are you already mind blown? Let's have some fun facts, before the
wrapping!
○ Did you know that there are two general types of electric motor? These are the AC and DC Motors.
Their main difference lies in the direction in which the direcfions flow.
○ Did you know that electric generators operate opposite to that electric motor? It is because they
produce electricity when their rotating part is turned by an engine.
○ And lastly, Michael Faraday and Henry Joseph were the first to make the motion with electric
current.
●○ We are Hashtag productive again!
○ Another new science enlightenment has brightened our brain bulbs!
● May these learnings raise us to build future innovations and create wonderful inventions for the
betterment of our society!
○ Again, we are the ABE Sophomores and this is The ABE's Podium!
●○ Think. Create. Inspire. Be an Engineer. Be one of the Industry's Greats!
