I. OBJECTIVE(S) The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
A. Content Standards The unit, mole, that quantitatively measures the number of very small particles of
matter
B. Performance The learners should be able to analyze the percentage composition of different
Standards brands of two food products and decide on the products’ appropriate percentage
composition
C. Learning Determine the percentage composition of a compound given its
Competency(ies) chemical formula and vice versa.

IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT What is a mole?
A. Reviewing previous What day to day activities do you see that apply the mole concept?
lesson or presenting the Who can go to the board and answer this problem?
new lesson - How many molecules of water are there in 54 g of H2O?
Solution:
Given: 54 g of H2O
Find: Molecules of water
Molar of H2O = 2+ 16 = 18 g/moles
So, the number of moles of H2O = Mass = 54g = 3 moles
Molar mass 18 g/moles
1 mole = 6.022x1023 molecules
Therefore,
3 moles x 6.02x1023 molecules
1 mole
= 18. 066 x 1023 molecules
ENGAGE At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
B. Establishing a purpose 1. Articulate a clear definition of percentage composition in the context of
of the lesson chemistry
2. Solve problems involving percentage composition
3. Cultivate an appreciation for the importance of percentage composition in
understanding the properties and behavior of chemical compounds.
EXPLORE (MOTIVATION) Situation Analysis:
C. Presenting examples/ Gina took the first periodical exam in science 9. She got 85% in a 100-item test. How
instances of the lesson many correct answers had she got? Explain your answer.
*This question will test students’ prior knowledge in Math 7.
EXPLAIN (ACTIVITY) Activity 1a. Count It!
D. Discussing new Write the symbol of atoms present in each chemical formula and identify the
concepts and practicing number
new skills #1 of atoms present.
Example: H2O H-2, O-1
Chemical Formula Number of Atoms Present
FeCl3
AgNO3
Na2SO4
Activity 1b. Elemental Weight
Give the atomic weight / mass of the following atom/element. Utilized the attached
periodic table of elements.
1. Ag
2. O
3. Au
Before proceeding to activity 2, explain that in laboratories people may perform
experiments that will require them to prepare solutions and verify the purity of
some substances. Thus, it is important to know how to calculate the percentage
composition of compounds.
What is percentage composition?
Percent Composition
- is a breakdown of how
much of the mass of any sample of compound comes from each element in the
compound. The sum of the mass percentage of each element of a compound is
always equal to 100%.
- It is the percentage ratio of the total mass of an element to the total mass
of the compound.
Formula:
% Mass percent = Mass of element x 100%
Mass of compound
Activity 2. Worth By Percent
Ethanol C2H6O is a mixture of gasoline and alcohol that is used as a fuel.
Calculate the mass percent of Ethanol. Refer to table 1. Data for Ethanol C2H6O
Table 1. Data for Ethanol C2H6O
Compound Chemical Number of Molar mass in 1 mol of C2H6O
Formula Moles Present
C- 12.01 g/mol x 2= 24. 02 g/mol
Ethanol C2H6O 2- Carbon H- 1.00 g/mol x 6= 6.048 g/mol
6- Hydrogen O- 16.00 g/mol x 1= 16. 00 g/mol
1-Oxygen
Total Molar mass= 46. 068 g/mol
Compute for Mass percent of Ethanol C2H6O
Mass percent of C = Mass of C in 1 mol C2H6O x 100% = ______________
Mass of 1 mol C2H6O
Mass percent of H= Mass of H in 1 mol C2H6O x 100% = ______________
Mass of 1 mol C2H6O
Mass percent of O= Mass of O in 1 mol C2H6O x 100% = ______________
Mass of 1 mol C2H6O
