INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE 4 (IC 4) CREATING AN INCLUSIVE SCHOOL
Task 3: Interviewing a teacher working in a mainstream school promoting inclusion.
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Student teachers are expected to identify a mainstream teacher (who is not a special teacher) and who
has children with special needs in her class in current year. It will be easier to identify a child first and
then interview her / his teacher.
INSTRUCTIONS:
One needs the consent of the teacher and the parents of the student to report the personal
names. Either take such consent in writing or use initials like (AK for Akash Kulkarni) in
your report.
You can audio or video record the interview and then submit the transcript of interview or you
can take notes while interacting and then submit the fair copy.
Format for the Task
1. First Page (College name, your name, roll no, Name of the subject(IC-4), Task name,
due date and submission date etc.)
2. Introduction (Creating an inclusive school and Role of a teacher.)
3. Objective: To get familiar with the issues, concerns and positivity of having a child
with special needs in class in order to ready oneself for effective functioning in
similar situation.

5. Interview of the teacher
PROBES FOR INTERVIEW: (This is just a blue print and you can choose your own points and
sequence)
a) Previous experience with any type of students with special needs
b) Any short term course done in the area of special needs? What are the sources of
information that the teacher uses to manage this students?
c) What are the major challenges having this student in class? (related to understanding
what he / she is saying, understanding and using assistive technology, keeping him in
the loop of learning, providing him curricular adaptation, dealing with parents,
preventing mockery / eve teasing / isolation by peers, providing exemptions /
concessions, student – teacher ratio etc

d) What are the problem solving strategies used by the teacher? How is the cooperation
of school authorities? What are the recommendations of the teacher for better
education?
e) What are the benefits of having such diversity in class? (benefit to teacher /
