Matthew 17:20 “He said to them, “Because of your little faith.
For truly, I say to you, if
you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from
here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Simply put, faith in prayer can move mountains. This has been one of the bible verses that
keeps me going nowadays. It implies the power behind faith and prayers within us. The verse
uses a grain of mustard seed and mountain as a comparison of how powerful a prayer can be
despite of its size. It tells us that no matter how diminutive one’s faith may be, the prayer
associated with it is as powerful as moving mountains which, in literal terms, is impossible for a
person to do so. This metaphor may also be implied in our daily lives with the mountain being
the insurmountable obstacles, challenges, and even dreams we are confronted by in life, a
single call to God through prayer like a grain of mustard seed would enable us to do the
impossible by moving the mountains we’re facing. As life unfolds, people tend to be more busy
and forget to pray or be reminded of God. This is one of the things adulthood may cause as
adults tend to be occupied with their careers, relationships, and family. I, too, am reaching
adulthood and is worried of ending up like that. Faith is our belief in God and one must allow
his/her faith to grow, replenish, and ignite, most importantly when you feel hopeless and lost. I
once was asked what I would wish to God if given the chance that he would immediately
granted and I answered “I hope for my faith to be strengthened and replenished.” because at
the back of my mind, I knew that when I am fully into the adulthood, I might be shaken or also
forget due to skepticism and I wish not to. Faith reignites the fire in our hearts and souls, and
prayer is its tool. At times, these mountains may seem overwhelmingly vast and may cast a
shadow on me and my ambitions, sometimes we just want to leave everything behind and stay
in the mountain. Yet, we also fail to think that among those mountains, God stands taller than
them. It is in these times that the enlightenment of this verse serves as our compass that urges
us to reflect upon this verse and what God wants us to be reminded of.
Humans are the only species on Earth who are blessed by God to have faith and prayers.
However, as humans, it is also evident that we can only do little compared to the ability of God,
thus, we are often unable to control or do what we wish to. Some may think that all hope is lost
and give up. Some may do their utmost best to reach whatever they can and tell themselves “I
did my best, this is all I can do.” but feeling either proud or discouraged. Nevertheless, there are
still people, such as me, who trusts themselves that they can do more with God’s grace and
when all hope is gone, God is our hope. People who believe and trust God never lose hope and,
with prayer, is blessed by God to achieve whatever is meant for them in God’s perfect time
because you can do all things with God who strengthens us. Prayers are thought to us as a way
of communicating with God in churches, especially during the Holy Eucharist, but God
reassures us that the church are not necessarily the establishments built, but His people who go
into the said establishment to praise and glory His name. The church is within you and no
matter where and what the circumstances are, God is always all ears for us and a simple talk
with Him is already a prayer. Hence, I firmly live by this bible verse and I believe in God who
answers my prayers in ways He had planned for me, plans to prosper and not to harm.
