Math Tutorial

This document contains a tutorial sheet with questions about signals and systems from a course at IIT Ropar. It includes: 1) Determining the Nyquist rate for different operations on a signal x(t) 2) Analyzing whether aliasing occurs when impulse-train sampling is performed on a signal x(t), and determining the Fourier series representation of the output signal. 3) Identifying whether several statements about impulse-train sampling of signals are true or false. 4) Determining the values of ω for which the Fourier transform of a continuous-time signal xc(t) converted from a discrete-time signal xd[n] is guaranteed to be zero.

EE201 : SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS
TUTORIAL SHEET - 9
Instructors: Dr. S. Agarwal and Prof. J. S. Sahambi

1. Let x(t) be a signal with Nyquist rate ω o . Determine the Nyquist rate for
each of the following signals:
(a) x(t) + x(t-1)
dx(t)
(b) dt
2
(c) x (t)
(d) x(t) cos ω o t

2. Consider a real, odd, and periodic signal x(t) whose Fourier series repre-
sentation may be expressed as
P5 1 k
x(t) = k=0 ( 2 ) sin(kπt).

Let x̂(t) represent the signal obtained by performing impulse-train sampling on x(t)
using a sample period of T=0.2.
(a)Does aliasing occur when this impulse-train sampling is performed on x(t)?
(b)If x̂(t) is passed through an ideal lowpass filter with cutoff frequency Tπ and pass-
band gain T, determine the Fourier series representation of the output signal g(t).

3. Determine whether each of the following statements is true or false:

(a) The signal x(t) = u(t+To ) - u(t-To ) can undergo impulse-train sampling without
aliasing , provided that the sampling period T < 2To .
(b) The signal x(t) with Fourier transform X(jω) = u(ω + ωo ) − u(ω − ωo ) can
undergo impulse-train sampling without aliasing, provided that the sampling period
T < π/ω o .
(c) The signal x(t) with Fourier transform X(jω) = u(ω) - u(ω - ω o ) can undergo
impulse-train sampling without aliasing, provided with the sampling period T <
2π/ω o

4. A discrete - time signal xd [n] has a Fourier transform Xd (ejω ) with the
property that Xd (ejω ) = 0 for 3π/4 ≤ |ω| ≤ π. The signal is converted into
a continuous - time signal
P∞ sin Tπ (t−nT )
xc (t) = T n=−∞ xd [n] π(t−nT )

where T = 10−3 . Determine the values of ω for which the Fourier transform
Xc (jω) of xc (t) is guaranteed to be zero.
