ME 1101: Basic Mechanical Engineering

Course Outline
Course Code ME 1101 Credit 1.50
Course Title Basic Mechanical Contact Hour/Week 1 hour 30 mins.
Engineering

Semester/Term: 1st Year 1st Semester

Academic Session: Fall-2023

Course Teacher: Tashin Ahmed Apon, Lecturer (Full-Adj.), ME, BAUET

RATIONALE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS: Mechanical engineers are responsible for the creation of
machines, engines, robotics, and other complex systems. They work in various industries such as
automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, medical and healthcare, and energy management. One of the
most important aspects of mechanical engineering is innovation. Moreover, an ability to identify,
formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and
mathematics hoped to be achieved through this course.

Course Contents:

Concepts of work and heat; comparison of work and heat, path and point functions, properties of water
and steam, different property diagrams: phase rule: thermodynamic property tables and charts; Mollier
diagram, dryness fraction of steam, ideal and real gases; equations of state, work and heat transfers in
non-flow and flow process, fundamentals of steam, gas and water turbines with their accessories;
internal combustion engines, introduction to pumps, blowers and compressors; refrigeration and air
conditioning systems, Introduction to boilers, operation of modern steam boilers, accessories and
mountings; performance study of steam boiler.
