Hybridizationsample

This document provides sample problems for determining hybridization and drawing Lewis structures. Students are asked to: 1) Determine the hybridization around all atoms in molecules including CH4, Cl2, NF3, CH2CH2, CO2, CH3CH2CO2H, and CHCH. 2) Draw Lewis structures for the red/boldfaced atoms in molecules including CO, HCN, CH3NH2, and CH2NH. 3) Using energy diagrams, show how all bonds form for the red atoms, including single, double, triple bonds and bonds with hydrogen. Students must show the hybridized orbitals that lone pairs are located in.

Hybridization and Bonding Sample Problems

Determine the Hybridization around all atoms. Note that you’ll need a correct Lewis structure to determine this.

CH4 Cl2 NF3 CH2CH2 CO2 CH3CH2CO2H CHCH

Draw a Lewis structure for each atom. Using Energy Diagrams for the Red/bold-faced atoms, show how all
bonds (including single, double, and triple between the red atom, as well as bonds with hydrogen atoms) form.
Remember that each bond MUST contain one electron from each atom. Single (sigma) bonds come hybrid
orbitals, while double and triple bonds (pi bonds) come from unhybridized p-orbitals. Also make sure to show
the orbitals that lone pairs are located in (these must be hybridized). Make sure to get the hybridization
correct!
