DROPS Initiative for Object Safety

The document discusses National Oilwell Varco's (NOV) DROPS initiative to prevent dropped objects in the oil and gas industry. It outlines NOV's DROPS mission to reduce incidents and provide transparency when they occur. It also describes NOV's DROPS team and charter, which includes monitoring incidents, conducting root cause analyses, developing secondary retention methods, and implementing lessons learned. Additionally, it provides statistics on historical dropped object incidents and examples of NOV's engineering efforts to design equipment to prevent dropped objects.

on preventing dropped objects, with the
ultimate goal of delivering a second nature
dropped objects prevention strategy across
our industry.

number of incidents due to dropped objects. Our
goal is to provide clear communication to our
customers and employees in instances when
incidents occur.

Tracking Dropped Objects
Tracker Tickets are used for logging customer:
• Questions
• Issues
• Complaints

Tracker Tickets can be related to:

• Field support, people
• Field support, technical
• Parts

When becomes DROPS a HSE incident?
When a DROPS incident has a risk >1:
• Near hit (near miss)
• Injury not requiring medical care (non-
recordable)
• Injury requiring medical care (recordable)
• Fatality
• Damage to the environment

Cause:
• Part of machinery/equipment
detached/separated and dropped or
launched from original mounted position
• Uncontrolled and unplanned release of
stored energy.

Other Definition for DROP
• A typical Dutch and Scandinavian Treat

Average Per Year
Average number of DROPS incidents per month:
• 2012 9.2
• 2013 10.5
• 2014 12.0
• 2015 15.0
• 2016 YTD 16.7

Reasons:
• Increased number of pieces of equipment in operation
• Internal Dropped Object focus (NOV)
• High Customers focus on DROPS
• Growing industry awareness

Design approach that can be used
for any tool
Objective:

The main functionality of the guide is “damping of wireline whipping”.

The primary design criteria were:

• As few parts as possible,

• Parts required assembly inside a housing,
• Housing after assembly as few parts as possible to keep it closed
capturing as many as possible parts,
• Securing methods used allowing visual inspection for integrity and,
• Securing as rigid as possible.

• Doing the above will bring your cost down and safety level up!

Rev B, 14 parts
Rev A, 12 parts

Proposed design changes based on field
input

• Extended length to damp the amplitude.

• Replaced CuNiAl weld layer with Albromet380 wear pieces.
• Wear pieces size range specific.
• Housing captures wear pieces.
• Wear pieces pre-installed.
• Bottom and top wear piece are identical.
• Reduced weight from 250lbs to 160lbs.
• Added hinges to simplify handling.
• Option to extend second guide from bottom top guide.

New design • Weight 165lbs
• Length 40”
• Range max cable size:

• Number of parts 35 of which 14 captured in the housing.

New design Feedback from customer Rig personnel;
• No moving parts
• Effective and easier to maintain
• Damps more effective compared to shorter version
• Neglect able wear on bushings only scratches
• Larger bushing works well with smaller wire (used a
2.3 bore on a 1.75” wire)
• Housing captures parts in case of failure
• Reduced weight is a benefit but weight is also
required for damping
• For installation would be beneficial to only have to
remove a door (segment). Comment from NOV site is that
this will however effect the other features negatively

New design Cost

Reduced the cost with a proven 49.8%

Out of the Box Thinking
Challenge to design a system that:
• Is holding parts in case of sheared bolts (DROPS)
• Prevents torque loss due to nut is backing off
• Prevents nut backing off and resulting in DROPS
• Verification of integrity of system shall be visually possible
Use or design non conventional systems to
replace locknuts, castellated nut with bolt
and cotter pin, other?
