areHave you heard birds singing loudly?
Have you seen flowers poke through the
soil? Spring must be here! Spring is the
season between winter and summer.
2. Spring: Nature Awakens
During the spring, the days get longer
and warmer. Animals that hibernate
or sleep during the winter begin to
wake up. The skies are also filled with
more rain.
Spring: Nature Awakens 3Rain helps plants grow. The roots of
the plant push underground. They hold
the plant in place and pull water from
the soil. The stem grows out of the soil
and holds the leaves up to the sunlight.
The plant uses the sunlight for food.

Not only are flowers and other plants
blooming but so are trees. Like some
animals, the buds on a tree have been
asleep all winter. In the spring, it is time for
them to wake up! The sunlight helps tiny
green leaves to grow from the tree buds.

In the spring, bees, butterflies, and
other insects return. The busy bees
buzz from flower to flower. They
collect nectar for food to eat. Soon the
nectar will become honey.
Spring: Nature Awakens 7Spring is when baby birds hatch. But
first, the male bird must find a mate. To
attract a female, he sings beautiful
songs. The female then builds a nest.
She uses twigs, grass, and feathers.

The female bird then lays her eggs.
She sits on the eggs, keeping them
warm and safe until they hatch. Once
they hatch, the baby birds have to eat.
Both parents feed the baby birds.
Soon, they will learn to fly!
‘Spring: Nature Awakens QMany animals also have their babies
in the spring. Warmer weather brings
plants for food. A cow has a lot of
grass to eat. She can then make lots
of milk to feed her baby calf.
10. Spring: Nature Awakens
Spring brings warmer weather and
longer days. Plants, animals, and
insects all want to be outside in the
sun. Do you know who else wants to
be out? You!
