Chapter 8 Simple Machines

This document discusses the six types of simple machines: inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, and lever. It describes each type in 1-2 sentences. It then focuses on levers, explaining the three classes of levers based on the position of the fulcrum, load, and effort. Class one levers have the fulcrum between the load and effort. Class two levers have the load between the fulcrum and effort. Class three levers have the effort between the fulcrum and load. Examples are provided for each class of lever. The document concludes with four questions related to simple machines and levers.

SIMPLE MACHINES
SIMPLE MACHINES
A Simple machine is a device capable of making our work easier, usually by overcoming a force
of resistance (load) at one point by application of a more convenient force (effort).

TYPES OF MACHINES-There are six types of simple machines- the inclined plane, the pulley,
the wheel and the axle, the screw, the wedge and the lever.

1.Inclined Plane-is a simple machine consisting of a sloping surface, used

for raising heavy bodies.

2.Pulley-is a simple machine consisting essentially of a wheel with a

grooved rim in which a rope or chain can run to change the direction
of the pull.

3.Wheel and Axle-is a simple machine consisting of a wheel attached to a

rod called the axle.

4.Screw-is an inclined plane coiled into a spiral.

5.Wedge-is a simple machine consisting of two inclined planes that meet at a

sharp or pointed edge.

6.Lever-is a simple machine consisting of a rigid rod arranged so that it can

move freely around a fixed point of support.

Lever-It consists of three parts-
1.Fulcrum-is a fixed point in a lever about which the rod moves freely.
2.Load-is an object that has to be cut or moved.
3.Effort-is the force that one needs to apply on a machine/rod to perform a task.
There are three types or classes of levers-
Class one lever-Levers in which the fulcrum is situated between the load and the effort are called
class one levers.
Examples-seesaw, crowbar, scissors and pliers.

Class one lever

Class two levers-Levers in which the load is situated between the fulcrum and the effort are called
class two levers.
Examples-wheelbarrow, nut cracker and bottle opener.

Class two lever

Class three levers-Levers in which the effort is situated between the fulcrum and the load are called
class three levers.
Examples-stapler, fishing rod and tongs.

Class three lever
