Assignment 2 Dama Eng'g

This document contains information and questions for three assignments: 1. An earthen dam project that involves calculating the phreatic line and seepage quantity, and examining the impact of adding a horizontal filter. 2. A slope stability analysis using Bishop and Swedish methods, providing material properties, slice dimensions, and a diagram of a slip surface and slices. 3. Designing a 50m high constant angle arch dam using thin cylinder theory for a valley that is 60m wide at the base and 90m wide at a height of 50m, with an allowable concrete stress of 5MPa.

Assignment-II

1. An earthen dam made of homogeneous material has the following data:

Level of top of dam=210m
River bed level=192m
HFL of reservoir=208m
Width of top of dam=10m
U/s slope=3H: 1V
D/s slope=2.5H: 1V
Coefficient of permeability of dam material=3*10-4cm/s
A) Determine the phreatic line for this dam section and the seepage quantity passing through the body of
the dam.
B) Draw the seepage line and the discharge quantity if a horizontal filter of length equal to 16m is
provided inward from the downstream toe of the dam.
2. Figure 1 shows an embankment (slope 3:1) for an end-of-construction condition. The cross section
contains two principal zones – the embankment fill and the foundations, for which the shear strength
properties and unit weights are, give in Table 1a. The circular slip circle and the slices used in the stability
computation are also shown.

Additional information on the dimensions of the slip surface and slices are given in Table 1b.
