Part 1: The Rapid Planning Method® (RPM™)


The Rapid Planning Method is a proven system for taking anything you can envision and making it real.
The strategy behind RPM is different from any other project management system or productivity tool on
the market because it focuses you on three specific things:

1. Gaining absolute clarity about the Results you’re committed to achieve


2. Tapping into a Purpose that compels you to follow through: the emotional drive inside you (and your
team) that keeps you going, even when the inevitable obstacles show up
3. Giving you a flexible, Massive Action Plan that maximizes the choices available to you as you move
toward your Results

The 3 Questions of RPM


There are a lot of ways you can use RPM to take your business to the next level. The first
step, however, is as simple as training yourself to ask and answer three questions on an
ongoing basis:

R What do I really want? What’s my outcome? What’s the specific Result I’m committed to
achieve?

P Why do I want to do this? Why is it a “must” for me? What’s my real Purpose?

M What specific actions can I take in order to achieve this Result? What’s my Massive
Action Plan?

Whether you’re planning a day, a week, a project, or even a conversation with someone, when you
focus on what you want (the Result you’re committed to achieve) and why you want it (your Purpose),
you’ll take different and more effective actions to get to where you want to be.

For example, you might have “Call John Smith” on your to-do list. Without defining what you want out of
the conversation, however, you could call John and cross it off your list, and still not have accomplished
anything meaningful. Instead, if you first ask yourself, “What’s the Result I want from my conversation
with John?” and then, associate to the reasons why it’s important to you, you’re going to have a much
more effective conversation with John.

RPM™ Blocks: The Basic Building Block of Any RPM Plan


There are just three parts to any RPM plan and they coincide with the three questions of RPM.
Look at the below example to see how an RPM block is created:

What do you really want? What’s the Result you’re committed to achieve?
2. Add Your Purpose
Why do you want this Result? What will this give you? Your purpose will be unique to you! There’s no
right or wrong!
3. Create your Massive Action Plan
What are some actions you can take to get your result? This is your menu of options that will help you
achieve the Result you want. Be sure to number each action item to help you keep track.
4. Circle Your Result
It’s in the center because it’s the target
5. Asterisk the Musts (*)
Put an asterisk net to the most important action items. Remember: 80% of your Result usually comes
from just 20% of the actions. Often, you don’t need to complete all of your actions to achieve your
Result!

Pro Planning Tips


√ Make sure your Result is S.M.A.R.T: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time Defined
√ When brainstorming your purpose, use words that move you emotionally. Don’t use a $5 word,
when a 50¢ word is more compelling!
√ Once you create your menu of options in your Massive Action Plan, be sure to put the “must”
actions on your schedule or calendar so they get done!

just draw your RPM plans on the back of a napkin and still be very effective! When you’re done,
use the checklist on the next page as you practice your RPM skills.

Checklist for Improving Your RPM Plans


RESULT
√ Is your Result S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time Defined )? Did you
include numbers, percentages and/or a deadline by which you’ll complete it?
√ Does it contain words or phrases like “create, establish, determine, begin, resolve, maintain or make
major progress on?” Could it be made more specific?
√ Did you circle your Result? Did you draw a box around your RPM Block?

PURPOSE
√ Does your Purpose give you the necessary drive to make you want to follow through?
√ Did you use words like “because, in order to feel, to experience more, so that I can...?”
√ Is it emotionally compelling or does it contain a $5 word where a 5¢ word would give you more
emotional juice?
√ If you’re using RPM with your team, be sure to engage your team members in the process.
Remember, people do things for their reasons, not yours. Find out the “why” for each of yourteam
members and make sure that their input is reflected on your plan.

MASSIVE ACTION PLAN (MAP)


√ Are each of your action items clear enough so someone else could read it and be able to complete it
for you?
√ Are your action items ruthlessly specific? Do they include who, what, where, when and/or how?
√ Did you abbreviate where necessary to keep your action items to one line to make the RPM Block
appear as clear and clean as possible?

If you want to create a life you love and that supports you, you need to stop planning around “to-dos”
and start planning around what you want for your life. Most people do this backwards. They start by
trying to plan their time. But with zero idea what you’re planning for, is it any
wonder so many people end their days frustrated, even if they “got a lot done”?

To manage our lives we need a life management system. RPM™ starts with the core belief that there
are specific areas of life to be managed for your life to work optimally.

For 95% of the population, there are two Areas of Management: Professional and Personal. Within each
of these, there are domains that require ongoing focus and commitment to constantly improve. These are
your “Categories of Improvement.” You have a set of Categories of Improvement for your personal life
as well as a set for your professional life. Most people share several common ones, while having some
that are unique to them. Here are some Category ideas:

What are the specific areas of your life that you’re going to manage and measure on an ongoing
basis? What are some areas of your Personal Life and your Professional Life that you must
consistently focus on and improve in order for your life to be successful and fulfilling?

Your categories are the pivotal areas where if you don’t improve, the quality of your life will suffer
and if you do, your success and fulfillment will go through the roof. For example, if you don’t focus
on and commit to continually improving your physical body, will your energy and health get better or
worse? Very often, people focus on their career so intensely that they leave almost nothing for their
body – until it comes back to bite them. Or maybe you’re doing well physically but you’re neglecting
your finances. Learning how to balance each area of your life is critical and having Categories of
Improvement allows you identify and zero in on the areas you are committed to improving and
measuring your results.

While it takes some time to complete this, once it's done, you'll come back to this vision for each of

to why this is so important to you and ensure that you are on target in each of your Categories. Plus,
it will serve as a running checklist of all the Results you are committed to in each of your Categories.

something she can refer to for the next several months or year. (Most people lock in their Categories
of Improvement with their “Magnificent 7” for each one and then just review and make updates once a
year.)
