CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problem

English is the most commonly spoken language in the world and stand as
international language. English is as an International language and plays a major role in the
world. There are four language skills that every single human being should need to
communicate with others. They are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. According to
Rao (2019), speaking and writing are productive abilities, while listening and reading are
receptive. However, one of the important skills that should be mastered is speaking. To use
English well, speaking is one of the important skills.

Speaking skill may be define as a crucial ability in a language aspect, since it is one of
supporting skill that someone can be acquire language well by spoken those languages.
Samad, Bustari, Ahmad (2020) argued that speaking includes sound to convey meanings to
create interaction happen. This indicates that speaking is a collaborative communication
process which involves ideas between speaker and interlocutor with reliable purpose.
Speaking is a production skill that drops into two main groups: fluency and accuracy.
Fluency means people capability to carry on when they are speaking naturally. Accuracy
consists of the use of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation through several activities.
According to (Dionar and Adnan 2018), state that speaking is the core of language learning.
There is an assumption that successfulness in language learning is discovered by
accomplishing acquisition in speaking. Speaking is the foremost skills for the effectiveness of
communication. It means that without any speech, communication will not exist.

So, speaking skill is very important to be taught to students, because speaking

involves interaction to train students more easy to acquire English language through
collaborative communication process. Speaking is an activity used by someone to
communicate with other. It takes place everywhere and has become part of our daily
activities. When someone speaks, they interact and use the language to express their ideas,
feeling and thought. They also share information to other through communication.

TikTok can potentially engage the students to different activities. Besides learning
languages, TikTok can prove that it can assist the learners to become more creative (Klein,
2019). TikTok application is a Chinese social network and music video platform launched in
September 2016 based on (Aji 2018). The application allows users to create their own short
music videos. The majority of TikTok application users in Indonesia, themselves, are
millennial children or commonly known as generation Z. Currently, based on (Dewanta
2020), TikTok is not only a media of entertainment but also as a media of education,
especially those related to English language. There are many content creators who provide
English learning content, such as speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and common
mistakes

B. Identification of the Problem

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. The Theoritical Framework

1. Definition Speaking

Speaking is one of the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
It is the means through which learners can communicate with others to achieve certain goals
or to express their opinions, intentions, hopes and viewpoints. In addition, people who know
a language are referred to as „speakers‟ of that language. Furthermore, in almost any setting,
speaking is the most frequently used language skill. Speaking is expressing thought, ideas,
and feeling which use the ability to pronounce the words to organize the words into phrases
or sentence to choose the words related to the topic.

Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and
nonverbal symbols, in a variety of contexts.3 From this definition we can share our idea to
others with oral communication. Speaking usually symbolized as express feeling to others.
Through speaking, humans are able to connect their mind in every aspect of life. That is make
the students more fluency in their communication. Because When they speak, they know
what they are thinking and how they feel about it, and as you speak other people make
judgments about your character and assumptions about what you are thinking and why.4
Speaking for communication is designed for the intermediate to advance level classroom.

Chaney (1998) in Dwi Fanan 2021 states that “speaking is the process of building and
sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of context”.
Speaking is a crucial part in language learning. It needs the speakers to produce the target
language in the spoken form. Moreover, it involves the speaker to use speech express
meanings to the other people (Spratt, Pulverness, and William, 2005). Some people think that
if they want to be able to speak fluently in English, they need to be able to pronounce
phonemes correctly, use appropriate stress and intonation patterns and speak in connected
speech. However, speaking is more than it. Actually, speakers of English have to be able to
speak in different genres and situation (Harmer, 2007).
Thornburry (2005:8) in Anni 2020 says that speaking is used to express their ideas
and to communicate to people in civilized world. Speaking ability serves students to be able
to communicate their opinion, feeling and expression with no limitation of different native
language, culture and country. It is in line with Brown (1994:237) in Anni 2020, he states that
social contact in interactive language functions is a key in which it is not what you say that
counts but how you say it, what you convey with body language, gestures, eye contact and
other non- verbal message.

From definition above the writer concludes that speaking is one of four skills of
English to express opinion, idea, thought, our feeling and etc to the other people, with
speaking the people can communicate each other so, the people especially the students have
to mastery this skill because this is oral skill that very important for second language learner
or foreign language learner to communication in their live. Without speaking we can not
express what we want to express and it is make people difficult to communicate with other
and will caused bad relations.

2. The Elements of Speaking

Speaking ability is a complex skill because at least it is concerned with components of

pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency (Nurul 2020).

a. Pronunciation
Pronunciation is the students’ way to utter English well. When teachers teach English,
they need to be sure that their students can be understood when they speak. They can
follow the teachers’ utterances and pronounce it well.
b. Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the basic thing in a communication Vocabulary is basic to
communication The students need to learn what words mean and how they are used.
Vocabulary was necessary to give students something to hang on to when learning
structures, but was frequently not a main focus for learning itself.
c. Grammar
It concerns with how to arrange a correct sentences in conversation. Both vocabulary
and grammar need to be taught in context and the students should always be given
plenty of opportunities to use the language that they have learned in class. This mean
that they do not just learn the rules superficially, but put them into practice in order to
communicate.
d. Fluency
It can be defined as the ability to speak fluently and accurately. People who speak the
language quickly and confidently with few unnatural pauses, it is called as fluency.

According to Harris in (Andi and Arafah 2017), states as follows :

a. Pronunciation Pronunciation is what speakers concern with as it comprises rules to

utter words accurately, according to (Harmer 2001) cites in (Nurani and Rosyada
2015).
b. Vocabulary According to (Hornby 1995) cites in (Asyiah 2017), defined vocabulary
in three senses that, cover the total number of the words which make up a language, all
the words known to a person or used in a particular book, subject, and etc. A list of
words with their meaning.
c. Grammar Grammar is viewed as the most essential aspect of language learning for
second language learners based on (Singh et al. 2017)
d. Comprehensibility According to (Cahyaningrum 2020), comprehensibility is a ability
to understand, know or get the speakers’ point to other.
e. Fluency According to (Fillmore 1979) cites in (Pratiwi 2018), fluency is the ability to
fill the time by talking without stopping or making pause.

3. Recount Text
a. Definition

According to Anderson in Atikasari 2019, a recount text is a piece of text which

retells past events, it is usually in the order which something that happened. “In a recount
text, the students must retell the sequence of events or experiences which they already got in
the past” (Nafisah & Kurniawan, 2020). While, Knapp & Watkins (2005) in Multazim 2019
says that recount texts are the simplest type of texts, formally, recounts are sequential texts
which focus more than sequence a series of events. In every story, no matter how simple,
need an orientation. Indeed, it is impossible to tell a story unless that there are characters set
up in a particular time and place, although many postmodern narratives play with these
conventions.

So, it can be concluded that recount text is a text which retells event or experiences in
the past. such as vacationing in a beautiful city or place, camping, returning home, and so on
b. Generic Structure of Recount Texts

According to Lancashire Council (2008) in Husna 2019, a recount text has several
generic structure consists of orientation, events and reorientation. Each generic structure has
social functions. The explanations of them are explained below:

1. Orientation Recount begins with telling the reader who was involved, what
happened, the location took place and the time of event. Orientation gives the reader
the background information needed to understand the text and they would recognize
about the scene setting and the context of the text.
2. Events. Event is the main activities that occurred in the story of the text. In writing a
recount text, events are ordered in a chronological sequence. Sometimes, additional
details are added to give information for the reader.
3. Reorientation Reorientation is a closing step of statement that includes elaboration.
Several recount texts also have a concluding paragraph. In this concluding
paragraph, the writer could give the personal comment or statement.
c. Language Features of Recount Texts

A recount text has linguistic characteristics or in English terms is language features.

This statement supported by Saragih, Silalahi & Pardede (2014), they states that the language
features in a recount text is use of nouns and pronouns to identify such as animals, people and
something, use of past action verbs refers to the events, use of simple past tense to located
events in relation to experience‟s time, use conjunctions and time connectives to make
sequential the event, use of adverb and adverbial phrases to indicate place and time, and use
of adjective to describe nouns. Gerot and Wignell (1994), the language features of a recount
text that should be fulfilled are specific participants, using material process, a circumstance of
time and place, using past tense and temporal sentence.

4. Definition of Tiktok

Herlisya & Wiratno (2022) argue that using TikTok application in learning English
can help students to improve their speaking skills. TikTok media can also improve students’s
English listening skills (Perangin-angin, [Link]., 2021). Rahmawanti (2021) and Ubaedillah,
[Link] (2021) also stated that TikTok is the second most favorite social media for students to
learn English and is used by English teachers in distance learning. It means that TikTok can
used for learning English and can help them to improve their English language skills.
Based on (Yang 2020), TikTok application has many advantages. Seeing the various
features that exist in TikTok application. It is very possible to be designed as a media for
learning English language and literature. TikTok application can be used to teach four skills,
namely listening, speaking, reading and writing skills integrated in it. For speaking skills,
students can use the voice feature in this application and then communicate via the network.
Likewise, by using the features in TikTok application students can play roles that prioritize
student expression and creativity. TikTok application is also an effective media to use in
teaching and learning, by using TikTok application, process teaching and learning is more
efficient and effective, because with a short time the teacher only conveyed important things
that could make it easier for students to understand the learning conveyed by the teacher.

The TikTok application gives its users freedom according to theory Communication,
which is helping people to express themselves and to record good life is the meaning of the
video's existence (Mancini and Hallin, 2012). Here are some of the advantages of using a
tiktok application as a training wheel for influence and future content makers, TikTok
provides a framework that makes it easier for people to make especially if they are not sure
what else to do. They have captured new demographics, tilting success with younger
audiences reminds me a lot of Facebook and Snap chat. Might pave the way for other parts of
the platform which the creator created the framework for creating.

It is conclude that the TikTok application can be used as a medium interesting and
effective learning. First, the TikTok application fulfills learning needs of students. Second,
TikTok application attracts student’s interest, Third, the TikTok application equivalent to
experience, maturity development and characteristics of students who are the millennial
generation who incidentally is attached with the digital world.
CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

Speaking is very important and must be practiced continuously. Speaking is one of

the skills that learner should acquire because people think that speaking is very useful in daily
lives; increase vocabulary, continue to practice speaking both at school, in the environment
and at home. Tiktok is a social media platform that is utilized as a learning medium since it
has a large number of users, complete features, and a variety of content (Pratiwi et al., 2021).
TikTok application can be used as media in improving the students speaking skill. Students
can use TikTok for speaking skills in recount text. they can share experiences and increase
their knowledge because tiktok is not only for dancing or entertaining but also teaches
English, especially recount text

B. Suggestion

Students must continuously learn speaking, increase their vocabulary and often to use
English in practical day such as talking with other friend for any place and any time, The
students’ should take much part in acting out and students must utilize media such as TikTok
in learning English, especially speaking, because students can learn anywhere and anytime.

The teacher should teach more often about speaking skill, so the students won’t be
nervous to speak especially in the front of the class.
