AL11-Weekend Worksheet 3

Dolphins show signs of high intelligence through their complex behaviors and social interactions. They have large brains and are able to problem-solve, communicate using unique whistles similar to names, and work together in groups to hunt and protect their young. While scientists have observed dolphin intelligence in many areas, they have yet to fully decode dolphin language. Improved technology may help researchers better understand dolphin communication and social structures in the future.

2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR AHS-SHS-11

Weekend Worksheet 3

Sept. 24-27
September

PART A: READING COMPREHENSION

Read the passage and answer the questions.

The Cleverest Creature

[A] Humans can usually determine whether another human being is intelligent. This is
because intelligence often involves a combination of several clear features: complex thinking
and behavior, good problem-solving skills, an excellent memory, and the ability to
communicate effectively with others. If we use this same standard of intelligence to decide
who is the cleverest of the animal kingdom, dolphins are the clear winner.

[B] In terms of their physical features, dolphins have the second biggest brain of all living
things. Only the brains of humans are larger in size. This brainpower gives dolphins the ability
to interact with each other, as well as other sea creatures, in some incredible ways. For
example, photographers have recorded dolphins playing catch 1 with leaves in the sea.
Researchers have also watched dolphins create complex traps for fish and other small animals
that they enjoy eating.

[C] The most impressive aspect of the dolphins' behavior, however, is the ability to use
sounds - whistles, whines, and clicks - for a variety of purposes. By using clicking sounds,
dolphins create sound waves in the sea that allow them to know where surrounding objects
are. Dolphins also create loud explosions of sound called burst pulses to scare away sharks
and protect their young.

[D] The way dolphins interact with each other also curiously resembles human behavior.
Similar to humans, each dolphin has a unique voice - its own individual whistle sound that is
developed in the first year and remains throughout its life. Amazingly, these unique whistle
sounds are also used like names are used for humans. When one dolphin wishes to get the
attention of another, it mimics2 the unique whistle sound of that dolphin. Apparently, some
dolphins are even able to remember the unique whistles of dolphins that they met 20 years
earlier!

[E] Although scientists are aware that dolphins use their sounds in amazing ways, no one has
been able to identify and record their communication patterns accurately. In other words, no
one has been able to solve the mystery of dolphin language - at least not yet. With a
combination of improved recording technology, the experience of talented researchers, and
the public's general love of dolphins, there is more hope than ever. Many scientists now
believe that humans will understand much more about our intelligent sea friends in the near
future.
