DEFINITION
What is Electronics engineering?
Electronics engineering is an electrical engineering discipline. Electronic engineer uses
electrical components (semiconductor devices and integrated circuits)to design
electronic circuits, microprocessors and other systems. It covers analog electronics, digital
electronics, consumer electronics, embedded systems and power electronics.
What is Communication engineering?
Communication systems engineering is an electrical engineering discipline. It deals with
the design, development and maintenance of technology for communications, ranging
from telephones to Internet systems. It primarily addresses the challenge of how to
efficiently and effectively deliver information from one place to the other. Typical
examples are high-speed networks, Internet, cellular and satellite communications, and
WiFi or wireless area networks.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AREAS
Electrical engineers usually work in :
Power generation and transmission.
Electronics.
Communications systems.
Instrumentation and measurement.
Automatic controls.
Computers.
Their work contributes to almost every sector of society: electrical appliances for homes,
electronic displays for business, lasers for industry, and satellite systems for government
and businesses.
12
POWER GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
HISTORY
Pear Street Station was the first commercial power plant in the world. Based on dc
current generator, it started generating electricity in 1882.The station was built by a
company headed by Thomas Edison.
Power plants can be thermal (nuclear, gas, steam, etc.) or based on renewable
energy (hydro power plants, wind and photovoltaic power plants)
13
POWER GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
Electrical engineers in power systems guarantee to societies to have electricity with
voltage and speed regulation. This electricity is indispensable for the operation of any
electrical device.
Electrical engineers make the design of generators (nuclear generators, wind, etc.),
transformers, motors, and all necessary electrical equipment for the proper operation of
power plants. They also guarantee the right dispatching of the power to consumers
14
POWER ELECTRONICS
Electrical engineers working in power electronics (IGBT, diodes, thyristors, etc.) design
and develop products used to control motors and generators. For example, wind
plants, photovoltaic plants, electrical vehicle and HVDC technologies require power
electronics engineers.
15
AUTOMATION AND CONTROL
Regulation of the grid voltage, speed regulators in vehicles, temperature regulation,
speed control in motors, supervision and protection of power pants by using PLCs. This is
mainly designed by electrical engineers
16
INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENT
The status of most electrical components (generators, motors, converter, etc.) is
supervised by instruments (temperature measurement, voltage, current, etc.) in order to
guarantee the proper operation of these components.
Instrumentation engineers guarantees the right selection of instruments necessary to
supervise the status of electrical devises. Instrumentation engineers design and develop
new instruments based on the existing technologies (digital, fast and accurate
instruments, etc.)
