Cyst
• Definition
Pathological cavity lined by
epithelium and containing fluid or
semifluid material.
• Cysts not lined by epithelium
are called pseudocysts.
Components of Cyst
The cyst consists of:
1. Cavity or lumen.
2. Epithelial lining.
3. Connective tissue wall.

Epithelial lining
C.T. Wall
Pathogenesis of Cysts
• The epithelium presents in the future cyst undergo
proliferation.
• As proliferation continues, the cells in the center
of the epithelial mass become away from the
source of nutrition and degenerate, become
necrotic and liquefy.
• This creates an epithelial lined cavity filled with
fluid.
Pathogenesis of Cysts
Classification of cysts
Odontogenic Cysts
I. Odontogenic Cysts
A. Inflammatory B. Development
• Radicular cyst • Dev. lateral periodontal cyst
• Gingival cyst of neoborn
• Inflammatory lateral cyst
• Eruption cyst
• Residual cyst
• Gingival cyst of adult
• Dentigerous cyst
• Primordial cyst
• Odontogenic Keratocyst
• Calcifying epithelial
odontogenic cyst
Radicular (Periapical) Cyst
Radicular (Periapical) Cyst
Radicular Cyst
Case 1
• A patient is suffering from a slowly
enlarging mass.
• Pulp vitality tests were negative.
• Radiographically: round to ovoid
radiolucency, with a radiopaque margin.
There is a loss of the lamina dura. It
ranges from a few millimeters to several
centimeters.
➢ The histopathology shows:
• Cyst cavity: contain yellowish transparent
fluid rich in proteins and cholesterol.
• Epithelial lining: Non-keratinized stratified
squamous epithelium.
• CT wall: chronic inflammatory cells.
• Rushton Bodies
• Russel Bodies
• Cholesterol Clefts
• Cholesterol Clefts
• Foam Cells
Case 1
• What is expected diagnosis?
Radicular (Periapical) Cyst
Radicular Cyst
Inflammatory Lateral Periodontal Cyst
Residual Cyst
Developmental
Odontogenic Cysts
Case 2
• On radiographic examination, well-
defined , small rounded radiolucency with
a radiopaque margin along the lateral
surface of the root was found in
mandibular canine region. The related
tooth is vital with no symptoms.
• What is the expected diagnosis?
Case 2
➢ The histopathology:
• Cyst cavity.
• Epithelial lining: stratified
squamous epithelium composed of
1 to 2 cells in thickness.
• Clusters of glycogen-rich, clear
epithelial cells.
• C T wall.
Case 2
•What is the expected diagnosis?
Developmental Lateral Periodontal Cyst
Developmental Lateral Periodontal Cyst
Case 3
• A newborn baby had a small,
multiple whitish papules on
the maxillary alveolar
processes.
1. What is the expected
diagnosis and treatment ?
2. Describe its
histopathology?
Case 3
• What is the expected diagnosis ?
Gingival Cyst of the New Born
(Bohn 's Nodules)
• What is the treatment ?
No treatment as they rupture and degenerate
spontaneously.
Gingival Cyst of the New Born
(Bohn 's Nodules)
Case 3
• Describe its histopathology?
1. Cyst cavity: filled with keratin
2. Epithelial lining: keratinized stratified squamous
epithelium.
3. Connective tissue wall.
Gingival Cyst of the New Born
(Bohn 's Nodules)
Case 4
• A child with a soft bluish swelling
on the gingiva overlying the crown
of an erupting maxillary incisor.
• What is the expected diagnosis?
Case 4
• What is the expected diagnosis?
Eruption Cyst
Eruption Cyst
Case 5
• A patient had a painless soft
tissue swelling of the gingiva, in
mandibular canine premolar
regions. The lesion was negative
in the x-ray.
• What is the expected
diagnosis?
Case 5
• What is the expected diagnosis?
Gingival Cyst of Adult
