6 Introduction

1 Introduction
imc FAMOS (Fast Analysis and Monitoring of Signals) is a program for analyzing and evaluating
measurement results. Its scope of functionality is tailored to the requirements of measurement
and test engineering requirements. imc FAMOS provides convenient capabilities for relieving the
user of many routine tasks associated with the evaluation of data.
Using imc FAMOS, you can quickly and efficiently process large volumes of data and generate any desired
calculation algorithms in customary mathematical notation, without the need of programming skills.
Powerful capabilities of the display of data sets in either graphical or tabular form are available. It also
allows you to document and print out freely designed test reports.
imc FAMOS is designed for offline-analysis of measured data, and can thus not control a measurement
device itself.
imc FAMOS processes measured data obtained with imc equipment (e.g. imc CRONOS, imc C-SERIES, imc
µMUSYCS). Its scope of functionality includes a variety of import/export filters for common file formats
(such as the standard formats of other measurement equipment manufacturers).
The task of importing a file format to an analysis program which does not support it directly is often the
first and most difficult problem in evaluating measured data. imc FAMOS supports you in this task in a
many ways:
§ for simple ASCII-formats, for instance, there is a versatile and conveniently configurable Assistant
available,
§ for more complex formats, you can use the imc File Assistant, by means of which you can create
your own import filters.
imc FAMOS' functionality can be enhanced with supplemental modules and function libraries. Thus for
example there are expansion packages for:
§ designing digital filters,
§ for spectrum analysis,
§ order-tracking analysis,
§ and for classifying measured values.
Furthermore, function libraries created by the user can be integrated into imc FAMOS.

The basis for this tool kit's computational power is the data structure of the data sets used. Only data
sets having this structure return coherent results capable of interpretation.

2 Orientation
Upon the software's first session each day, a little animation plays. Afterwards, the main imc FAMOS
window, with a typical Windows application design, appears.

The imc FAMOS main window

The imc FAMOS main window is divided into a variety of regions.
At the top you see, as in other newer Windows programs, the multi-function bar or menu ribbon. It
initially feature four tabs: File, Variable, Extra and View. As is customary with the ribbon-based design of
controls, each tab represents a certain category of activity.
§ Under the tab File, you can open existing files for measured data, displays, reports, etc., or create
new ones. As is usual in programs having a menu ribbon, you also find the help, the options, and
the program reset command (New) here.
§ The tab Variable comprises all commands for lading, saving, displaying measured data and
otherwise editing them.
§ Under the tab Extra contains imc FAMOS-tools. The Data Editor provides a tabular view of your
measured data. The Dialog-Editor enables you to create your own personalized analysis program
interface (the dialogs), the Report Generator helps you document your measured data. With the
File Assistant, you can program filters for importing measurement files in your own file formats.
The DDE-interface serves the purpose of communication with Microsoft-programs such as Excel,
Word, etc.

8 Orientation

§ You can personalize imc FAMOS's user interface under the View tab. Here, you can load or save
these layouts or restore the default view. As well, the graphical view of your measured data (the
so-called curve window) can be loaded here again (see the file tab), or also close all open windows
immediately. By means of the command "Optimize All!", any deleted variable still entered in the
opened windows are deleted, or the windows are completely closed if none of the variables used
are in the variables list any longer. The curve window list contains the list of the windows opened,
which can be selected here. The Quickview window always provides a graphical display of the
currently selected data set.
Above the multi-function bar there is a quick access toolbar. To the right of the little imc FAMOS-logo
provides you immediate access to loading or creating files and to the options.

imc FAMOS' Applications window always appears upon starting up as it was when exited at the last
session. If you wish to restore the default arrangement, click in the Multi-function bar [1] "View" on
"Back to default". Then the main window will appear as follows:

FAMOS: Applications window

At left below the Multi-function bar is the variables field. This lists the data which are currently loaded as
in either Standard or Measurements [2] mode. In Standard mode, the are are listed as in the imc FAMOS'
predecessor versions [3]. In the mode Measurements, the data are displayed in measurement folders and
channels. For working with Panel pages, this is the preferable setting.
Below the variables list is the Functions list [4], displaying the available functions and commands. These
are arranged in major groups. By clicking on a group, it is possible to move from group to group.
Beside the functions list you have the Output box [6]. Here, output for the user's attention, such as help
texts, warnings and calculation results, is displayed.

9

Above this is the Editor box [7]. Formulas are entered here in standard mathematical notation and
calculation is started by pressing the button labeled Execute [10]. In the same box, it is also possible to
program and execute sequences (macros). Due to the large number of commands which apply to the
editor box, it has its own toolbar [8].
At the upper right is the Plug-in box [9]. This is where expansion modules having their own user
interfaces are displayed. The File Browser plug-in is always present for fast access to the measurement
files. By default, this box is minimized, meaning that only its icon is visible.
Status messages and short explanatory notes about the menu options appear in the status line [5] under
the output box.

10 Getting Started

3 Getting Started
Working with imc FAMOS is arranged in three stages.
1. Loading data
2. Analysis and processing
3. Documentation and saving results
For loading data, note that many programs use particular data structures, indicated by the file
extensions. However, there are only two data formats – ASCII and binary. For this reason, it’s possible to
transform every data structure into a different one using an appropriate filter, and then to load and
process the data.
imc FAMOS’ data structure is a combination of an ASCII header and data saved in binary format. In order
to be able to process any desired data sets with imc FAMOS, a tool is available under the menu item
Extra: File Assistant, for generating any kind of filters. This tool’s capabilities are so extensive, that it is
the topic of a separate training course.

Exercise: Loading, displaying and deleting a data set 11

3.1 Exercise: Loading, displaying and deleting a data set

Assignment and goal
In this exercise, data sets are to be loaded and displayed.
Load a data set, display it and then delete it again.

Procedure
· In the plug-in window, go to the Browser tab.
· Under Data Sources, go to the folder C:\imc\imc FAMOS\dat.
· Now select the files [Link] through [Link].
· Open the context menu (right mouse button) and click on "Load". The variables are listed in the
variable window.
To have the data sets displayed, highlight them in the Variables window. Now the following
possibilities are available:
· Menu ribbon > Variable tab > Show together
· The 3rd symbol in the Variables window
· Press the F4-key.
Highlight the data sets in the Variables window and select menu ribbon > Variable tab > Delete, to
delete the data set from the Variables list and to close the curve window.

Result

3.2 Exercise: Loading and displaying multiple measurements

Assignment and goal
Often not just one file of measured data exists, but multiple files which one wants to compare. As of
imc FAMOS 7.0, the Browser is directly accessible in the main window for this purpose; see the chapter
Orientation 7 .
Use the Data Browser to load multiple measurements and have these displayed in order to
obtain a quick overview of the measured data.

Execution
· In the plug-in window, go to the Browser tab.
· In the Browser, under the tab Data Sources, go to the folder "C:\imc\imc
FAMOS\Dat\EXPERIM".
· Ensure that the "@" symbol to the left of the folder is activated. When it is, the data and
their associated measurements appear in the Measurements list.
· If you have highlighted the EXPERIM-folder in the Browser window at left, then on the right
side, its associated measurement folders appear with a Play-symbol in front of the folder
name (see figure). Highlight all of the folders in the right window and click on any one of
these Play-symbols.
· In the Variables list, switch from the Standard view to the Measurements view.
· Create a new Panel: File > New > New Panel > Dialog
· Highlight Channels 1 through 3 with the left mouse button and and holding down the Shift-
key. After highlighting, left-click the mouse again on the channel entry Channel1 in the
Variables list, keep the key held down and then drag the channels into any position in the
Panel; then release. Select Standard for a standard curve window.
In the Variables list, select alternating loaded measurements.
· Go to the Edit tab under Panel (Design) and click on "Insert new page" and select Report
(Landscape).
· Highlight just Channel1, but multiple measurements in the window which is above it. Next,
left-click the mouse in the lower window again on the blue index number in front of the
channel name channel1 and its symbol, and while holding down the mouse button, drag the
channel into the Panel at any position and drop it. Select Standard for a standard curve
window.
In the Variables list, select alternately one or more loaded measurements.

Result
Using the Browser, you can quickly view and compare measurements. In the curve window, the
channel names are fixed in the former case, but the measurement flexible; in the latter case the
channel- and measurement names are flexible. Unless changes are made, the number of
channels or measurements displayed depends on the number with which the curve window had
been created.

3.3 Exercise: Filtering the Variables list

Assignment and goal
When there are very many loaded data, scrolling through and searching for specific variables takes a long
time. If some portion of the variables' names is known, it is possible to filter the Variables list for specific
entries.
Only display the variables whose names contain the string "Sintest".

Procedure
Re-load the data sets "Sintest1" through "Sintest5" and additionally the data set "Slope".
· Activate the search string for "Filter variables display" by clicking on the last icon in the
Variables window. Below the Variables list, the search string (content *) is shown.
· Enter "Sintest*". *".

Result
Only such variables are displayed which begin with the string "Sintest".

Remarks
The placeholder "*" stands for arbitrary strings. Alternatively, the placeholder "?" can be entered.
The question mark stands for exactly one arbitrary character. Placeholders can be set at the
beginning, the end, or in the middle.

3.4 Exercise: Editing the folder structure

Assignment and goal
imc FAMOS uses certain default folders for measured data and configuration files. It is possible to modify
these folders to personalize one's work routines.
Modify imc FAMOS’ default folder structure

Procedure
· Create the folder C:\Training using the Windows Explorer.
· Select the menu item Extra : Options : Folders.
· Change the path so that it goes to the folder you created. But leave the path specified under “Load
data files from:”, since the data sets used are found there. (see Fig.)

Results
From now on, all data are saved in the folder C:\Training by default. For opening files, the folder
C:\IMC\dat is offered automatically. Sequences, curve configurations, report files are searched
for in the folders specified. If you wish to access files in other folders, or to save files in other
locations, the entire file path must be specified.

Remarks
“Load data files from:” and “Save data files in:” should always point to different folders, since this
prevents accidental overwriting of the output data.

Assignment and goal

Most of the time, in addition to recorded readings, there are other variables also, such as value levels,
characteristic values, etc. These are easy to set up in imc FAMOS.
Generate, perform calculations on, and display three constants, once with SI units and once with
imaginary units..

Procedure
· Ensure that no variables and data sets are already open. First enter Voltage = 5 'V' in the Editor
window and click on the button for executing a single command step.
· Now enter Current = 3 'A' in the Editor window and click again on .
· Next, enter Power = in the Editor window. Double-click in the Variables window on Voltage (=5).
· Now select Group Basic Functions > Basic Calculations in the Functions window and double-click
to bring the function “Sample-wise Multiplication” into the Editor window.

Exercise: Input and functions window 25

Result
imc FAMOS automatically computes SI-units. If you enter imaginary units, they cannot be used
with this automatic mechanism! Which units are supported, plus additional specs, are stated in
the online help located at ? : Help Topics under imc FAMOS: Variables: Units.

Remarks
imc FAMOS also can use prefixes (m for Milli, k for Kilo…) to indicate the order of magnitude in
the curve window. However, these are only used with SI-units and even there only in usual
combinations (milliseconds, but no Kiloseconds). However, if you select under Configuration:
Numerical format: Order of magnitude a power of ten, then imc FAMOS will replace, for example
10^3 with Kilo even if the result is 1 kkg (Kilokilograms).

Since imc FAMOS 7.1 also prefixes of SI units (Milli, Kilo, Mega,..) can be used. This was not
possible in older versions. To work universally, please use the scientific notation:
Spannung2 = 5e3 'V'
Strom2 = 3e-3 'A'

All entries from the Variables list can be moved to the Operations line by double-clicking on
them, or by the Drag&Drop technique. They can be inserted at the position of the mouse cursor.
It can also be written directly into the input line. However, commands will only be executed if the
syntax is correct (misspellings are also syntax errors).

Using the controls on the Run tab (under the Sequence tab), you can run the sequence
commands in various ways:

Run: Executes the entire sequence

Execute command line: executes the active line
Start (Debug): Runs the complete sequence while observing breakpoints
Continue: Runs the complete sequence while observing breakpoints as of the active line
Single step: Executes the active line; the next line is subsequently highlighted
Single step in sub-sequence: Executes the active line. If this calls another sequence, the system
jumps to it and highlights the next line there.
Set active line: The yellow Debugger arrow is in front of the active line. In order to run just this
line, you can click on the arrow or use the F9 key.

Result
The fundamental frequency was determined to be approx. 368Hz (= 0.368 1/ms). Sintest_LP is no
longer so noisy, but is offset from the original. Sintest_Smooth is also noise-free but is phase-
correct.

This exercise shows that filtering always causes a phase shift. This occurs already during
measurement, when low-pass filtering is applied in front of the signal in order to avoid aliasing
effects. By means of its Smooth-function, imc FAMOS enables phase-correct smoothing.

4.5 Exercise: Analyzing a data set

Assignment and goal
Analyze the dataset [Link] by calculating its minimum, maximum and mean value. Subdivide
the dataset into four portions and display them all in a common curve window.

Procedure
To delete any still loaded variables from the Variables list, click on Restart under the File tab.
Load dataset [Link].
· Enter in the editor window Maximum=, get the function “Max” from the function window’s group
Analysis > Statistics > Generic, and also the dataset [Link], each by double-clicking on it, into
the Editor window. (see Fig.)
· Proceed the same way with the functions Minimum and Mean.
· Now, to generate separate portions of the dataset slope, use the function “Cut”, which belongs
to group Editing > Edit data. Right-click the mouse over the command and select Assistant from
the context menu. For “Cut section” enter “section1”, for “Starting dataset” enter “slope”,
specify the x-limits as 0 and 0.001, since the dataset slope is 4 ms long and we wish to generate
four equally long sections. Then click on the button “Copy” to move your entries into the Editor
window. (see Fig. )
· Copy the command lines you just wrote and adapt them to each of the other three portions. For
the second portion, use the limits 0.001 to 0.002; for the third 0.002 to 0.003 and for the fourth
0.003 to 0.0039.
Now execute the sequence partially (with F9 or menu "Run"-> "Single step").
Maximum = Max(slope)
Minimum = Min(slope)
Meanvalue = Mean(slope)

part1 = Cut(slope, 0.000, 0.001)

part2 = Cut(slope, 0.001, 0.002)
part3 = Cut(slope, 0.002, 0.003)
part4 = Cut(slope, 0.003, 0.0039)

· Display the dataset slope.

· Now use Drag&Drop to move the variables Maximum, Minimum and Mean as well as the four
portions from the Variables window to the curve window and drop them each onto the y-axis.
This causes all curved to immediately be displayed in a common coordinate system. (see Fig. )

5 Working with the Dataset Editor

The Dataset Editor serves the purposes of displaying and editing data in tabular form. In contrast to Excel
tables, this tool makes it possible to synchronize the graphical display with the sampling and triggering
times. Data in the table and curve window can be linked to enable targeted searches for individual
values.

Sample data set [Link]

How to load data sets into the Dataset Editor

· Select the desired variables and open the Dataset Editor
Time options
· No time comparison: Tabular display as in Excel
· Relative time comparison: The sampling time is represented by the cell height. For same triggering
times, the data appear aligned.
· Absolute time comparison: The triggering times are reflected graphically.
· X-Axes: Display of the X-axis as
· Index: Number of samples in the dataset
· X-values: Relative time in seconds
· Time: Absolute date and time

48 Working with the Dataset Editor

Transferring to Excel
· Check the option choices in the Display menu (Clipboard)
· Highlight a column using the Column menu
· If you wish to highlight more than one column, the display type “No time comparison” must be
selected
· With the item “Clipboard” in the “Edit” menu, the highlighted columns are copied to the Clipboard,
not with Copy or CTRL+C.
· Open Excel, select a cell and insert the column
Highlighting everything
· Right-click mouse over the column Þ Highlight the column with Shift + right arrow

Linking the table with the curve window

· Position the Dataset Editor and the curve window having the same data next to each other.
· If the option “Curve window” “Never hidden b main window” is activated, the main imc FAMOS
window also appears in the foreground as soon as you click on the curve window. This may cause
the Dataset Editor to be hidden. In this case, move the main window down to the lower edge, so
that you can later move it back.
· Click on the symbol and drag it onto the curve window. A line will appear in the curve window.
Move this line: the table will then scroll to the data which is along the line in the curve window. If
this doesn’t work, it is probably because a column is selected in the Dataset Editor whose data is
not in the curve window.

8.4 Pasting a curve window into an external program, e.g. MS WORD,

via the Clipboard,
By means of the menu item Edit\Clipboard, you can copy a curve window to the Clipboard. Settings for
this purpose are available under Options \ Clipboard Settings:

· The most important setting is made under Layout. There, you set whether the proportions, meaning
the height and width of the curve window displayed, are retained or whether a fixed size is to be used.
In this case, set the size by means of the parameters x and y under Coordinate System. This size is also
used for curve windows of fixed size in the Report Generator.
· Additionally, you can set the font and line width for curves, coordinate systems and grids. The length of
main ticks and secondary ticks on the coordinate axes determines the appearance of the markers on
the lines.
· If you wish to apply this setting permanently, click on the button Set as default!. As well, the setting
can be saved by means of Save As....

8.5 Working with the curve window

In this chapter you will get to know the most important functions for setting the curve window. For more
detailed descriptions, see the separate manual for the Curve Window (online help called via F1 in imc
FAMOS, or in PDF format on the installation CD)

8.5.1 Basic settings under the menu item: Configuration> Display

Here, you set the basic display style. All settings can be made permanent by clicking on the button Set as
default.

The curve window’s Display dialog

Remarks
The x-axis’ scale determines the customary time axis in seconds’ or the absolute time display. The
scaling in selected x-unit always begins at 0. This applies both to complete measurements and to
individual trigger events within a measurement. This is the condition for being able to compare
measurements taken at different times in a single curve window. Days/Hours/Minutes (relative)
behaves the same way as selected x-unit and is better legible in the case of long measurements.

8.5.3 Zooming, Navigating

Click on the Zoom symbol and drag open a frame. You can perform this process in multiple stages,
and/or reverse it using the buttons . Using , it is possible to reverse all the zooming
having taken place.
Additionally, the axes have tools which can be used for zooming or also moving
the displayed region.
Corresponds to Rezoom

for one axis.

Stretching and compressing the axis
The X-axis and each Y-axis can be set separately.

8.5.4 Measure Window

Besides providing the ability to survey the dataset, the measure window offers a number of other
functions:
Calculations pertaining to two points (difference, slope, surface area, frequency, RMS-value...)
Curve segment to imc FAMOS: A copy of the region highlighted by the cursors is transferred to imc
FAMOS. This also works from within a running measurement. In this context, note also the transfer
settings under the menu item Options. There you can set the extracted data to be renamed
automatically.
Reprocessing signals: The data between the cursors can be edited in a variety of ways.

8.5.6 Markers
Using context menu Edit\Marker, a number of ways are available to add comments to curve windows.
Here, just the most important ones are presented.

Creates a text marker (without arrow)

Creates a marker: Without any line, the marker can be positioned

freely. The icon of the little flag with a line always set s the marker at the
next closest curve line.
A list of the placeholders' formats appears when you hold the mouse in the
Definitions window over the text. Z.B. <xvalue:f3p0>

Moves an existing marker: With or without connection to any curve line.

Creates markers at the same X-position at all curve lines.

Sets markers at the minimum and maximum of the range displayed.

The region denoted by the measurement window is also observed.
