Paddington’s Post (Week 1 - based on the original stories by Michael Bond)
We are going to read the book over the next 3
weeks. The first part of the book is included in this
unit of work. It tells the story of Paddington and has
lots of envelopes to open inside. We will be following
Paddington’s adventures and reading the mail as we
go along.
LO: To retrieve and sequence
Read through the first part of the book on p2-p6. It tells the story of how
Monday Paddington meets the Brown family, includes a letter to Aunt Lucy, introduces
8.2.21 Mr Gruber and has a map of Paddington’s important places. Complete the
retrieval and sequencing activities. Complete the reading skills activities on pages
7 or 8.
LO: To deconstruct a letter
Re-read the letter that Paddington sends to Aunt Lucy. What features can you
Tuesday
find? What writing skills has he used? Can you find any sentences using
9.2.21
conjunctions (Y1) or contracted words (Y2)? Complete the deconstruction
activities on pages 9 or 10.
LO: To use apostrophes
We have learned how to find and use contracted words: don’t, I’m, it’s, etc. The
punctuation mark used is an apostrophe. By the end of KS1, children are
expected to know how to use apostrophes in two different ways. Please choose
Wednesday the most appropriate activity for your child on pages 11, 12 or 13. For example,
10.2.21 you may decide that your Y2 child needs more practice with contracted words.

LO: To plan a letter
Today you are going to plan a letter to Paddington from Aunt Lucy. You might
Thursday
want to read Paddington’s letter again. Think about what he has said to Aunt
11.2.21
Lucy. How might she respond? Use the plan on page 14 to help choose some key
events, words and feelings.
LO: To compose, edit and review a letter
You can now officially put on your Aunt Lucy hat. You have become Aunt Lucy!
You are going to write your letter (as Aunt Lucy) using your plan from
Friday
yesterday. Mrs Lambert has written an example letter on page 16. You are going
12.2.21 to be writing in 1st person, just like you did with the diary entry. This means that
you will be using words like I, me and my. When you have finished, edit and
review your work using the checklists.
Make sure that you have permission from a grown up before going online.

Wednesday: To use apostrophes (Y2)
In this activity, we will learn how to use an apostrophe to show possession.
If someone possesses something, it means that they own it.
For example, Paddington owns a suitcase which means that it’s
Paddington’s suitcase.
The ’s shows that it belongs to Paddington.
Can you add the apostrophe and s to show what belongs to
Paddington? You also need to write the object he owns.
Paddington___ __________ Paddington___ __________
Paddington___ __________ Paddington___ __________
Look at the picture and write 2 sentences saying what belongs to who. Use some
adjectives to describe the object:
For example,
Mrs Brown’s jumper is yellow and fluffy.

Dear Paddington,
I’m so glad that you made it to England safely. You’re a very lucky bear
because you’ve found a lovely family to stay with. Is London busy? I’ve
always imagined that the streets would be full of cars and people but not
bears! What are you eating? I do hope that they have orange trees in
England and that you can use Mr Brown’s long ladder to reach the
oranges. Does Mr Brown even have a ladder?
I’m hopeful that you’re remembering your manners Paddington. When
someone is being kind to you, you must say please and thank you. Don’t
forget to wipe your muddy feet before going into your new home. Do you
have to share your room with anyone? If you do, it’s a good job that you
don’t snore too loudly.
I’d love to come and see you soon and then you could show me around
London. Take care Paddington. I do like your new name!
Love from Aunt Lucy
P.S. If Mr Brown doesn’t have a long ladder, you could just try climbing
the trees to get the juicy oranges. You are a bear after all!
