Benha Faculty of Engineering Assignment No. 2

Civil Engineering Program Date: 23/10/2023
1 Semester 2023/2024
st Due to Date: 30/10/2023
Course Title:
Total Mark: 10 marks

Problems.
1. A wet sample of sand weighing 415g is taken for water contentdetermination by a
pyconomenter. The weight of the pyconometer, sandand water is 1667 g and the
weight of the pyconometer full of wateralone is 1440g. Assuming Gs = 2.67
determine the water content of thesample.

2. An oven-dried sample of sand weighing 386 g is taken for specific gravity

determination by a pyconometer. The weight of the pyconometer, sandand water is
1676 g and the weight of the pyconometer filed with wateralone is 1435g. Calculate
the specific gravity.

3. Estimate the shrinkage limit of a clayey soil sample whose voids ratio inthe dry state
is 0.65, and the specific gravity is 2.75.

4. The unit dry weight of a soil was found to be 2t /m3 when it reached it’sshrinkage
limit. If water was added to the tested soil (till it reaches L. L)its volume was
increased 2.4 times is volume at shrinkage limit. Gs = 2.6.
Determine:
 Water content at shrinkage limit.
 Water content at liquid limit.
 Unit dry weight at liquid limit.

5. In a liquid limit test the weight of water required to reach this limit was 30g. If the
total volume of the tested sample at the liquid limit stage was 46 cm³. The specific
gravity of soil is 2.5 determine the liquid limit of the tested soil?

6. A sample of clay was left to dry when containing to its liquid limit. The initial Volume
of the sample was 26.0 cm³. While its weight was 42.0g. After complete drying its
volume was 12.0 cm & its weight was 27.0g. Determine the shrinkage limit of the
sample & state the type of the soil.

7. A sample of clay weight 26.2 gms at its liquid limit. After drying the clay, its weight is
19.40 gms and its volume is 12cm³ determine its liquid limit and shrinkage limit. Gs =
2.6 .

8. The result of sieve analysis test on sample of sand having a weight of 400gm. Is as
follows:
Seive-no Opening (mm) Wt. Retained (gm)
7 2.4 0
14 1.2 52
25 0.6 84
36 0.42 64
52 0.3 56
72 0.21 44
100 0.15 40
150 0.1 36
200 0.075 24
Plot the particle size distribution curve and determine the effective diameter and
uniformity coefficient.

9. Classify the following soils by the Unified System.

10. On the triangular classification chart, represent the following soils.

 35% clay, 40% silt, 25% sand.
 5% clay, 60% silt, 35% sand.
 50% clay, 20% silt, 30% sand.
 20% clay, 25% silt, 45% sand, 10% Gravel.
 25% clay, 15% silt, 60% sand.
