PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

Grade 1 (Number Sense)
• Students interpret and explain quantity to 100 (GLO; we will focus on 1-20 in this lesson)
• Quantity in the world is represented in multiple ways
• Represent quantities using words, numerals, objects, or pictures
Grade 2 (Number Sense)
• Students analyze quantity to 1000 (GLO; in this lesson we will focus on smaller numbers, like 1-100)
• Represent quantities using words and natural numbers
• Identify the digits representing [thousands, hundreds,] tens, and ones based on place in a natural number

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Represent number with base ten blocks
2.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
• Worksheets
• Base 10 blocks
• Whiteboards/markers (?)
• Matching games (purple and green for all; ziploc bags to hold them?)
• Matching games mini set (for smartboard camera demo)

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
• SPLIT CLASS
• Have matching games printed on coloured paper, cut out, put in bags
• Have matching games mini set for demo
• Make sure grade 2s are working QUIETLY while grade 1s are learning. Tell Martha to move AF, LF, and any
other students who might be distracted by the grade 1 lesson – they can work on the back table
• Have a detailed plan for Martha – give a copy of lesson plan? Have materials sorted (grade 1, grade 2 in
ORDER)
• Make sure worksheets are simple enough for independent work
• Make journal prompt jar

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
• Class warmup - all together (use camera/smartboard)
- Model (with base 10s and place value chart): 1 ten, 4 ones → write the number on your
whiteboard
- Write: 1 ten and 7 ones → write the number on your whiteboard
- Write: expanded form: 20 + 6 → write the number on your whiteboard ~2-4 min
• Grade 1s CHALLENGE / Grade 2s
- Model: 3 tens, 2 ones → write the number on your whiteboard
- Write: 2 tens and 5 ones → write the number on your whiteboard
- Write: expanded form: 300 + 20 + 6 → write the number on your whiteboard
Body Time
Place Value Memory 1) Give very specific instructions to each group ~3 min for
Match a. Show with mini demo on camera explanation,

different sets) side and all the green on the other activity

c. You will need to pick one of each colour on your turn
d. When you flip a card over, put it back down in the exact
same spot
e. If you get a match, you can take another turn
2) Have matching cards in bags (?), assign partners while placing
the cards in spots all over the classroom
Gr. 2s – handouts 1) Write list of tasks on the board (1. Math facts; 2. Tens and ones;
3. Journal or booklet)
2) Hand out math facts sheet <1 min
3) Give EA the tens and ones worksheet for when they finish.
4) Also give EA the journal prompt jar just in case
Gr. 1s – direct 1) Hand out place value charts and base 10 blocks
instruction 2) Have place value chart and base 10 blocks ready to help if
they’re struggling
3) Base 10s – Show a number (under 20) on the
camera/smartboard and have grade ones build it with base 10
blocks on their place value charts.
~10 min
4) Challenge: show me your age with base 10 blocks
5) Challenge: show me today’s date (16th) with base 10 blocks
6) Challenge: show me how many grade 1s there are with base 10
blocks
7) Challenge:
8) Challenge:
Gr. 1s - handouts 1) Base 10s x 2
~1 min
2) Extra – colour by number with addition/subtraction
Gr. 2s – direct 1) Show “number of the day” worksheet – review the following:
instruction (time a. Place value
permitting) b. >, <, =
c. Expanded form
2) Hand out “number of the day” – they should be able to do it ~10 min
themselves… if they’re struggling (a small group of them likely
will), do some small group direct instruction on one of the back
tables. Ask Martha to circulate between both sides, and give her
some extra worksheets.
Conclusion Time

Assessment
• Checking that grade 1s are representing numbers properly with base 10 blocks
• Have grade 2s hand in tens and ones worksheet – see if they are understanding base 10s
• Other worksheets?
