Blended Learning Detailed

This lesson plan aims to teach kindergarten students addition and subtraction word problems. Students will rotate between three stations: teacher-directed instruction involving a video on word problems; collaborative work in groups using blocks to visualize word problems; and independent digital practice on an educational math game website. To assess learning, students will complete an individual paper test at the end checking their understanding of solving word problems. The plan provides rationales for how the selected multimedia resources meet criteria for high quality and support different learning needs through visual and audio components.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:

Kindergarten Addition and subtraction Word Problems

Objectives:

Students will be able to confidently solve addition and subtraction problems.

Students will be able to work through addition and subtraction word problems.

State Standards:

[Link].2 Solve real-world/story problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to
10 and differences within 10.

Context:

Teaching the students word problems will give them a better idea of how to solve real
world problems in everyday life. Before this lesson, I will talk about how math can partake in
everyday life and how much you really use it and then show an example of a real world math
problem which will introduce the word problem lesson. Prior to this lesson, students will already
know how to add and subtract up to 10. Having this knowledge will help them solve the word
problems a lot easier.

Data:

Students will be grouped in groups of 4 or 5 depending on how many kids are in the
class. Students will be grouped based on who they are sitting with at their tables. Having 5 or
six tables of students will mean that I will have to group the tables together. Meaning 2 tables
together. The group data will be collected through the test at the end of the session.

Procedures:

Introduction (10 minutes):

Students will come into the classroom and put their things away in their
designated cubbies and find their seats. They will then sit and wait for the bell to
ring and take attendance. Then I will go into explaining each station showing
examples if needed for what to do in each. The first station, teacher directed, is
when the students practice the problems with the teacher and follow along with
the examples given after watching a video for better understanding. Then they
will split off into doing independently with the teachers assistance while the
teacher is working one on one with students. The second station, collaborative, is
when the students will be working together in their groups working through word
problems together using blocks as a visual. The last station, independent digital,
is when the students will play a word problem math game in order to practice
what they have learned.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes):

During this station, the teacher will sit with the small group at a group table and
will show the students a video on addition and subtraction word problems and
then walk through them all together and then wait for the answers at the end of
the video. Then the teacher will let them do some independent work with a
worksheet and work one on one with each student to make sure they are
understanding the concept of the problem.

Collaborative (10 minutes):

During this station, students will work together looking at word problems on a
different worksheet while using blocks to demonstrate the word problem in a
more visual way to help them actually see the problem and how this will help
them in the future. For example, if the word problem ends up having 6-4, the
students will lay out 6 blocks and take away 4 to see how many is left to answer
the problem.

Independent Digital (10 minutes):

During this station, students will work independently on the site

[Link]
[Link]. This site will allow them to play the game and learn how to walk
through a word problem by picking pieces of the problem out. Independently
working through the game will allow them to work through the problem using
different methods on how to solve the word problem.

Closure (20 minutes):

During this time, I will pass out a paper test with some word problems on it and
the students will take this and work through each problem. Once the student is
done, they will come up and I will check it for them to make sure they have a
good understanding of what we did in class before giving out their homework.
Once every student has gotten their paper checked and handed it in, I will then
give them the homework to complete for the next day.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)

“I Know It” games

This lesson tool is a math game website that will get the students more excited
and involved in the topic they are learning. It will also show them real life
examples of how math can be shown in real life. This app can be used for many
different grade levels and different math topics depending on what you are
teaching your students. This multimedia passes the LORI criteria because the
content quality is good, there is a learning goal, it has good motivation because it
is in the form of a game, the presentation and design is good, it is reusable, and
it has good standards. This multimedia provides audio instruction for all learners
by providing a listening option for the user. This is beneficial so any student
having trouble reading and comprehending.

“Mighty Owl”

This video is explaining different word problems that are more real world. It also
has a story to it to get the students more engaged in learning. Using videos
during a lesson can vary with whatever lesson you are teaching. This multimedia
passes the LORI criteria because the content quality is good, there is a learning
goal, it has good motivation because it is in the form of a story, the presentation
