CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The first chapter presents the background, problem statements, objectives,
signeficances, and scopes of the research.
A. Background
Learning English that is varied aims to create and improve student learning outcomes
for all the material taught at school. Especially for teenagers in junior high school. they
find it difficult because they think that English lessons are a scourge. There are some
materials that are considered very difficult for students to understand, one of which is
descriptive text material. This can be seen in the results of my observations when doing
PPL at SMP 30 Makassar which is normatively unsatisfactory. There are still many
students who get scores below the KKM (Minimum Completeness Criteria) determined
by the school.
Students tend to be lazy to read books and less enthusiastic about participating in
descriptive text learning. This is because teachers tend to be monotonous and
conventional in the teaching and learning process. This can be seen in the unfavorable
learning attitude that appears when teaching and learning activities take place which
indicates the students' low enthusiasm for learning about descriptive text material. Some
students are sleepy, talking to themselves with their friends, walking here and there,
looking unfocused, making noise, doing other subject assignments, not wanting to take
notes on the explanations given by the teacher, not doing the assignments given, not
responding to teacher questions, and not wanting to take notes. ask questions even
though they don't understand. In addition, the low achievement in learning English in the
descriptive text is also caused by the fact that the teacher has not used the media in the
learning process to catch up. Teachers only use the media as limited to textbooks, SBA
(Teaching Material Supplements), and whiteboards.
Language is primarily an instruments of communacation among human bieng in a
community. Language concists of four bacis skills, namely listening, reading, speaking
and writing. Listening and reading involve receiving messages and are therefore often
referred to as receptive skills. Speaking and writing involve language production and are
therefore often referred to as productive skills (Harmer, 1991). People realize that,
without language they cannot interact to each other. Language can become a bridge to
connect one another that live indifferent places and cultures.by using a language one can
gain informaion, knowledge, and express one’s feeling and emotions. Nowdays, many
poeple learn the internasional languages.one of the internasional languages in English.
English is an internasional language which has an important role in communication by
poeple to interact with other poeple in the world. As internasional language, English is
used to conduct communication in almost the entire world in many countries and also it
is used for obtaining successful jobs, promotions, academic function, and business
interactions. Consequently, many people tend to master English to compete in
globalization. Therefore, English is taught as the first foreign language which is one of
the important subject in Indonesia from elementary school until university. Writing is
one of the important skills in English, and it can help the students in learning and
developing their English by expressing their knowledge, experience and the way of
thinking.
Ignace states writing is a complex activity since it requires students’ comprehensive
abilities such as mastering grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Besides, to write well,
the students are expected to be able to present their ideas in the written is not only
delivering ideas to others but also using a sheer energy to compete the writing process
itself:thinking the ideas, preparing the outline, transferring the outline into draft, revising
the draft, and finally proofreading the draft to prepare for the final outcome. In addition,
the ability to write involves specific skills, such as; the use of punctuation, stucture of
sentance, vocabulary, and organization of paragraph (1969:22)
In writing process, learning will always deal with the process of putting ideas into
word, then putting words into sentences and putting sentence into paragraphs untill they
can create a piece of writing. In order to have a good quality of writing, there are some
special considerations that have to be taken into account by the writers (Seow, 1984:1)
Writing is one of the skills that should be taught integratedly, but it is regarded as the
most difficult language skills since it requires a higher level of productive language
control than the other skills. In fact, the students are not capable to make a good writing
(Steven:2004).
B. Prblem Statements
Based on the background above the researcher states the problem statement as
follows:
Teachers should have to look for various alternatives and solutions. Teachers should
create learning activities that can attract students’enthusiasm for learning English,
especially descriptive text material. Therefore, the selection of relevant methods and the
use of image media will help the success of the teacher's efforts, namely in improving
student learning outcomes.
The action chosen in this descriptive text learning is the use of image media with
varied objects. Learning activities by utilizing this media are a follow-up to the
improvement of learning carried out by teachers so that student learning outcomes have a
significant increase. Picture media can make it easier for students to learn it. In addition
to being varied in learning, using picture media will attract the attention of students in the
learning process. Picture media make it easier for students in the observation process.
C. Objectives of the Research
Based on the problem statement above, this research was provide the empirial account
of:
In the use of image media, teachers can use pictures of animals or photos of
themselves from students. Picture media can be obtained from students themselves who
bring or from teachers who have been prepared. When learning takes place, students do
not immediately describe the picture that the teacher gives. The teacher asks many
questions related to the picture in question. After students get a lot of information related
to pictures, then they can make descriptive text. With the guidance of the teacher,
students can make correct sentences according to the tenses used.
Find out whether the use of serial pictures in teaching descriptive text can make
students’ more active and happy to teaching English, therefore can improve the students’
writing ability of seventh grade in SMPN. 30 Makassar.
D. Significance of the Research
The research was expected:
With the use of these varied image media, it is hoped that students will be more
enthusiastic and learning more interesting. If the teaching and learning process can run
smoothly, learning outcomes will automatically increase. Students no longer feel bored
with the conventional learning system. With the use of image media, students can find
more information and the learning process with 5 M (Observing, Questioning, Trying,
Reasoning, and Communicating) which is in accordance with the spirit of the scientific
approach (scientific approach) can run smoothly
