Tutorial 2

The document contains 7 questions about spring-mass systems and calculating natural frequencies and stiffnesses. Question 1 asks to plot displacement vs mass data from a table and calculate the stiffness of a massless spring. Question 2 asks to determine the natural frequency of a spring-mass system given the mass and displacement. Question 3 asks to determine the stiffness of a second spring added in series to lower the natural frequency of a spring-mass system to half the original value.

(static) displacement is recorded below. Plot the data and calculate the spring’s
stiffness.
M (kg) 10 11 12 13 14 15 16
X (cm) 1.14 1.25 1.37 1.48 1.59 1.71 1.82

Question 2
A 0.453 kg mass attached to a light spring elongates it 7.87 mm.

Question 3
A spring-mass system k1, m, has a natural frequency of f1. If a second spring
k2 is added in series with the first spring, the natural frequency is lowered
to ½ f1. Determine k2 in terms of k1.
Question 4
A heavy table is supported by flat steel legs. Its natural period in horizontal
motion is 0.4 s. When a 30 kg plate is clamped to its surface, the natural period
in horizontal motion is increased to 0.5 s. What is the effective spring constant
and the mass of the table ?

T = 0.4 s T = 0.5 s
Question 5

Question 6
Determine the natural frequency for small oscillations of the system
shown. The mass of the pulleys and friction are negligible.
