DOORS

A door is a moveable barrier secured in a wall opening.

Functions:
1. They admit ventilation and light.

2. Controls the physical atmosphere within a space by enclosing it, excluding air
drafts, so that interiors may be more effectively heated or cooled.

3. They act as a barrier to noise.

4. Used to screen areas of a building for aesthetic purposes, keeping formal and
utility areas separate.
TYPES OF DOORS
Classification on the basis of arrangement of components:
-Ledged doors
-Ledged and braced
-Ledged and framed
-Ledged braced and framed

Classification on the basis of method of construction:

-Panel door -Flush door -Louvered door -Wire Gauze door

-Hinged door -Sliding door -Revolving door -Rolling shutter door
-Swing door -Folding door

Classification on the basis of material usage:

-Wooden doors, -PVC doors, -Glass doors, -Steel doors -Fiberglass door
- Aluminium glazed door
COMPONENTS OF A DOOR
a)Door Frame b)Door shutter
SHUTTERS: These are the
openable parts of the doors or
windows.

FRAME:
It is an assembly of
horizontal and vertical members
forming an enclosure to which
the shutters are fixed.

HEAD:
This is the top or
uppermost part of the frame.

SILL:
This is the lowest or bottom
horizontal part of the frame in
windows
(not provided in doors)
JAMB:
These are the vertical portion of the door frame onto which the door is secured.

HORN:
These are the horizontal projections of the frames.

REBATE:
It is the depression or recess made inside the door frame to receive the door shutter.
TYPES OF DOORS

LEDGED DOORS

• These doors consist of vertical boards called battens

which are nailed or screwed to the horizontal members
called ledges.

• Often the battens are 15 – 18 cm wide and 2 – 3 cm

thick.

USE:
• Used where strength and appearance are not
important.

• This type of battened and ledged doors suitable for

narrow openings.
LEDGED DOORS
LEDGED AND BRACED DOORS

• This is a battened & ledged door to which braces have been

added to prevent sagging.

• These braces must slope upwards from the hinge edge of the
door

• Braces: 100mmto 150 mm wide

30mm thick

USES:
These type of doors can be used for wider openings.
LEDGED AND BRACED DOORS
LEDGED AND FRAMED DOORS

• It is an improvised version of battened &

ledged door with provision of frame.

• Two vertical members called styles are

provided.

• Stiles are generally 100mm wide and

Thickness 40 mm
LEDGED AND FRAMED DOORS
LEDGED AND FRAMED AND BRACED DOORS

These type of doors are more

durable and stronger. Hence it can
be adopted for external use.
LEDGED AND FRAMED AND BRACED DOORS
FRAMED AND PANELLED DOORS

• These are very strong and will give good

appearance when compared to battened
doors. These are the widely used doors in
almost all types of buildings.

• The panels are made up of timber or

plywood or A.C. sheets or glass.

• These doors may be single leaf for narrow

openings and double leaf for wider
openings.
FRAMED AND PANELLED DOORS
GLAZED OR SASH DOORS

•The interior of room is visible through glazed

doors and light also passes through glazed
portion of the door.

•These may be fully glazed or partly glazed and

partly panelled. Glass panels are provided for
glazed doors.

•Used in hospitals, libraries, showrooms,

Banks, shopping units etc
GLAZED OR SASH DOORS
FLUSH DOORS

A flush door consist of a framework of rails

and styles and it is covered with pywood or
hardboard.
FLUSH DOORS

Commonly used specially for interior work.

Economical, easy to clean, better in appearance, reasonably strong, little affected by

moisture ,termite proof and crack proof.
LOUVERED DOORS

• Shutters are provided with louvers either fully or

partly.

• Louvers are arranged at an inclination that

horizontal vision is obstructed.

• Movable louvers and Fixed louvers

• Allow free passage of air.

• Used in sanitary blocks of public buildings,

Residential buildings, walk in wardrobes etc.
LOUVERED DOORS
COLLAPSIBLE STEEL DOORS

Consist of mild steel frame

Used in compound gates, residential

buildings,s chools, sheds, godowns,
workshops etc

ASSIGNMET:
COLLAPSIBLE STEEL DOORS
REVOLVING DOORS

• They normally have 4 wings or leaves that hang

on a centre shaft and rotate one way about a
vertical axis within a round enclosure.

• The wings are usually fully or partly

glazed.

• People can walk out and walk in at

the same time.

• They are usually provided in public

buildings.

ASSIGNMET:
ROLLING STEEL DOORS

The door consists frame, drum and a shutter of thin steel plate inter locked together.
A horizontal shaft is provided in the drum which helps to open or close the shutter.

These may be manually or automatically

operated.
ASSIGNMET:
ROLLING STEEL DOORS
SLIDING DOORS

• The shutters slide horizontally

along tracks with the help of
runners and rails.

• They consist of either one, two or

three doors that slide by each other
on a track depending upon the size
of opening and space available for
sliding.

• They can be easily cleaned and

maintained.

Used as patio doors in residences, shops, showrooms etc

SLIDING DOORS
SLIDING DOORS
SWING DOORS

• The shutters is fitted in its frame by special

double action hinges which permit the
shutter to move both ways – inward as well
as outward.

• To open the doors, a slight push is made

and the spring action brings it back to the
closed position.

• They are usually glazed or provided with

peep holes.
SWING DOORS
FOLDING DOORS

Made of many narrow vertical strips or creases

that fold back to back into a compact bundle
when doors are pushed open, these
strips or creases will be hanged from the top,
and run on a track.

They save space as they do not swing out of the

door opening, though their sound and weather
isolation is poor.

Folding doors are usually pretty noisy, and

considered not so durable
HINGED DOORS

These doors are hinged along one side to allow

to pivot away from the doorway in one
direction but not in the other.

The axis of rotation is vertical.

It is the most common type of door.

It is simple and rigid.

The panel swings, opens and closes on hinges.

Hinged doors require a minimum amount of
maintenance and cleaning.

They are not expensive and have an excellent

insulating ability.

However they take up room space to swing in.

GLASS DOORS

ASSIGNMET:
PVC DOORS

• Polyvinyl chloride PVC, is the world's

third-most widely produced
synthetic plastic polymer.

• PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid

(sometimes abbreviated as RPVC)
and flexible.

• The rigid form of PVC is used in

construction for pipe and in profile
applications such as doors and
windows.
PVC DOORS
PVC DOORS
ADVANTAGES
Durable and sturdy
They are stronger and made up of durable material which ensures that door will
stand the tests of time and never lose their shape.

Easy to maintain
They require very less maintenance and are not prone to rotting, flaking, rusting,
fading, or corroding. They are weatherproof and rigid and can be cleaned easily

Insulation and environmentally friendly

High level of insulation they provide warmth during winters but are also sound-
proof and help cut noise levels

Economical
Cheaper than wooden and aluminium options.

DISADVANTAGES
UPVC windows and doors are prone to sagging and sashing due to their light weight and
also because they are structurally not as strong as aluminium windows. Too much heat can
even result in the rupture of their frames.
STEEL DOORS

Types of Steel doors:

• Panelled door
• Battened door
• Mild steel door
• Corrugated steel
door
• Rolling steel shutter
door
• Collapsible steel door
Mild steel doors

•The door frame is made up of angle or T-sections.

•Shutter is made up of frame of angle of iron, having 2 verticals
at least 3 horizontal.
•Mild steel plates are welded to the shutter frame.

Corrrugated steel doors

These are same as mild steel sheet doors, but

in place of mild steel sheet corrugated steel
sheet is welded.
FIBERGLASS DOORS

Fiberglass doors can be made

to look like wooden doors.

A new technology called

'Accugrain', introduced
duplicates the grain of real
wood.

Many buildings are opting to

use fiberglass french doors as
entry doors but also on
garages and many other areas
around the house.
