ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess school environment and personal hygiene practices
among primary school children in a rural area of Mymensingh
Background: Poor school environment and personal hygiene practices
play major roles in increased burden of communicable diseases among
school children leading to sickness absenteeism and poor performance in
school.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, the sampling
technique was purposive. 20 components of school environment of
Ramganj Govt. Primary School was observed and noted by 3 rd year
Medical student of CBMCB. A total of 132 primary school children were
observed and interviewed by predesigned questionnaire by Medical
Students during August 2022. Participants were students of the Primary
School located in Churkhai, Bhavokhali, Mymensingh. Data analysis was
done by SPSS program version 20.
Results: Healthy school environment defined in this study had 20
components. Among 20 components 15 components were conducive to
health and 5 components were not conducive i.e. positive 75% versus
negative 25%. The overall impression was that the school environment
was good. Sample size was 132. Majority of students belonged to class V
(34.09%). The age distribution of respondents ranged from 7 yrs to 13
yrs. Mean age 9.95 yrs, standard deviation 1.671 yrs. Females were
marginally predominant. Male : Female ratio 97: 100. Majority of
students had literate fathers (65.91%) and literate mothers (53.03%).
Observation by medical student about personal hygiene of school student
were noted to be excellent (within range of 80 – 100 %) in cleanliness of
class uniform, scalp hair, hair combing and cleanliness of teeth and were

good (within range of 60 – 79 %) in wearing shoes and keeping hand and
fingers clean. Personal hygiene practices of school students as revealed
by direct interview were excellent (within range of 80 – 100 %) in daily
bathing, brushing teeth daily, washing hands before taking meal, after
coming from toilet, after playing and good (within range of 60 – 79 %) in
wearing sportswear when playing and wearing shoes or sandals when
going to field and were bad in brushing teeth twice daily (27.27% only).
Discussion: The results are better than the findings of studies conducted
in our country and neighboring countries.
Conclusion: More surveys are needed on large scale.
