Automatic Control Exam MEP 381

(1) The document is an exam for an automatic control course consisting of 5 questions across various control systems topics. (2) The first question involves determining the differential equation, natural frequency, and damping factor for an RLC circuit, and calculating the output for a given input. (3) The second question involves determining the range of k values that stabilize a given transfer function. (4) The third question involves finding the value of k for a system to have a steady state error of 0.05, and calculating the output of another system for a given input. (5) The last two questions involve analyzing stability by drawing polar and Bode plots

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF FIVE QUESTIONS IN ONE PAGE:

(Question one) (b1) (20 Marks) R=100 W 10 mH

Deduce the differential equation relating the output Vo with Vin , then Vin 1m F Vo
determine the natural frequency n and the damping factor .
Determine the value of Vo for Vin= 10 sin (104t).
(Question two) (b5) (15 Marks) k 1
X(s) Y(s)
s s3+4s2+s+2
Determine the range of k so that the following
control system is stable. 2

(Question three) (10 & 15 Marks) (b2, c1, c2) k

X(s) Y(s)
a- Refer to the figure; find the value of k so that the steady state s+2
error equals to 0.05. The input function is a unit step. 0.6
b- Given the following transfer function
𝟏 2
𝑮(𝒔) =
𝟐𝒔 + 𝟏
Obtain the time response if the system is subjected to the input
function shown in the figure. Obtain the output at 3s (three 0 Time
0 1 2
seconds).
(Question Four) (b4, b5, c3) (25 Marks)
The forward-path transfer function of a unity-feedback control system is:
𝟏𝟎(𝒔 + 𝟓)
𝒔(𝒔 + 𝟏)(𝒔𝟑 + 𝟓𝒔𝟐 + 𝟏𝟎𝒔 + 𝟏𝟎)
Draw the polar plot and then determine the gain margin and phase margin and check system stability.
Determine the value of added gain to adjust gain margin to 2. Determine then the new phase margin.

(Question Five) (b3, b5, c3) (25 Marks) Input 1 (1-s) Output
2
Draw the Bode plots for the following system, then s(s+0.2) (s +s+16)
determine the gain and phase margins (based on low
frequency values. Check system stability. Determine 10
the value of added gain in order to adjust the phase
margin to 30o. Determine the new gain margin. Hint
Draw the values of Ф at ω at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 5,
8, 10 rad/s.
