Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: Heart Word Practice
Objectives:
The students will listen, identify and sort the /sh/ by completing a sort and spell words using Elkonin
boxes.
State Standards:
Standard 2: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds.
2.4 Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds.
Standard 3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
3.1 Demonstrate the sound correspondences for common consonant blends and digraphs.
Context:
This lesson is for kindergartens to focus on their sight words. Would be a good thing to
focus on with the children. I decided this lesson would be good because it is a very helpful
way for kids to learn some words. Also, it is a fun way because they get to use hearts to put
on the words. Its better doing it in rotations so it can be fun for the children to learn in an
easy and exciting way while going through to other tables.
Data:
The students will be grouped in 3 groups which means smaller. It’s a better and fun way
for children to learn in smaller groups and rotations around the room to different
activities. The groupings will be based on the children’s knowledge level of how good they
know the sight words before I group them up. I will have a notebook od all the date being
collected and will be able to use it for future references when we do the next sight words
and rotations.

Instructional Plan
Hot Seat Warm Up: Heart Word Practice. Students will practice reading
(1-2 minutes) their heart words automatically. Teachers will hold up flash cards
Collect data about student progress and ask students to whisper and read the word as they see it.
Warm-Up Teachers will ask students to segment words by each phoneme
Phonemic awareness (sound) they hear in the word using Elkonin boxes and chips.
(2-3 minutes)
Demonstrate understanding of spoken Rash /r/ /a/ /sh/ (3 phonemes)
words, syllables, and phonemes (isolate,
blend, segment phonemes)
Cash
Sash
Lash
Mash
Shop
Ship
Shack
Ask students: what do you notice about these words? (They all have
the /sh/ sound in it.
New skill Today, we are going to learn about the letters that make the /sh/
(3-4 minutes) sound.
Introduce letter/sound or syllable
pattern
When you put the letters s and h together, they spell the /sh/ sound.
This is called a digraph. A digraph is when two letters work
together to make just one sound. The students will complete a /sh/
sound sort.
Decode words Let’s read some words!
(3-4 minutes)
Know and apply grade-level phonics Write the following word and model how to decode the word by
and word analysis skills in decoding
words
tapping and saying each sound, then blending the word.
shop
/sh/ /o/ /p/….shop!
Now have the students practice with the teacher with the following
words:
Ship
Mash
Lash
Your turn to practice on your own!
*the teacher will give a word list to each student to practice
decoding words with the sh digraph.
Dictated words Let’s encode words with sh spelling /sh/.
Read the following words to the students (one at a time). Students
should use elkonin boxes to spell the words. Remind students that
should have their own box, because s and h are working together to
make just 1 sound.
Cash
Rash
Sash
Dictated sentence: She has cash and a sash.
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutest)
This lesson will be in the starting of the day. All the kids will come in and sit at their
assigned seats. Then I will give them a couple minutes to sit and get all their stuff ready to begin
my lesson. I will then make sure everyone gets a chance to look at what we are doing today.
When everyone is sitting their quiet in their chairs then I will begin with my introductions of
today’s activity. To start off with it I will put the children in different groups. All together we
should have 3 group rotations for the day.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes)
At the teacher directed station, I want to make sure that all the students know all their
sight words and what to do. This station will be at the very front of the classroom in front
because it is where I will be helping the kids at my desk in front of the classroom with a table.
Collaborative (10 minutes):
At the collaborative station, the students will be working with a partner. The
students will be at the back of the classroom where the other big rug is. The students
will use their iPads to use the Flip Grid App. The kids know that the iPads are on the
iPad shelf on the side of the classroom. The kids will log into the app Flip grid and do
whatever assignment is assigned for them to do.
Independent Digital (10 minutes)
At this station, students will work independently on Epic Kids. They will be
sitting at a particular group of desks that I will assign beforehand when I am
explaining the stations in the introduction. They will go on the app on an iPad or a
computer whatever I assign to them. Then they will go on the app, and it will be able
to read to them instead of us teachers having to read along with it. Another cool fact is
that it can have activities they revolve around the book they listened too.
Closure ( 5 minutes):
The students will go back to their desks after they make sure everything is put
away. During this time when I am gathering everything up, I will let the children color a
piece of paper or look at books.
Rationale:
First, I started out with using the app called epic. I decided to use this multimedia
because I thought it would be a great idea for kids. It supports student learning by being
able to read online and have it read to you. It is high quality because my mom uses it in her
classroom and really likes it. Another thing is I see it all around from the daycare I worked
at, and they always used it. It can be different for instructions because you can put your
level choice of the grade and how hard or easy you want it to be.
Next website I used was called flip grid. Which is a piece of multimedia because you
can take videos of yourself doing anything and post it on the classroom. I highly recommend Flip
Grid because you can watch videos on it. Also, you can even create your own to watch others
and even make lessons. It is very good because the instructions are very clear and easy to
understand and there are also videos how to explain directions if needed help for anything. For
example, I post a video of what I want and the childen will be able to post it and watch the other
children’s videos.
