BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN OFFICE ADMINISTRATION
ACADEMIC YEAR 2020 - 2021
GUIDE ON HOW TO USE THE MODULE
A. For Faculty
The primary objective of this module is to address the learning of the students in Blended
learning approach. The author aims that through this module the school will meet the expectation
of the learners.
To the faculty of DLSP, you can use this module to supplement the learning of the
students. However, do not use this module to gain money from the students or sell this to other
instructors.
You can also use this module as a reference in preparing your instructional materials like
PowerPoint presentation and others, for synchronous/asynchronous learning or for preparing the
same module.
B. For Learners
This module is designed to engage you as learners, and to guide you as you finish this
subject GE 107 Science Technology and Society. In using this module, read every topic with
comprehension. Make sure that you have understood every lesson, because there are activities
for you to answer after every topic and all of the questions are answerable based on what you
have understood in the topic.
You are expected to answer all the activities in this module because it is one way of
assessing yourself if you really understand the lesson. You may answer your activities on another
sheet of paper and submit the hard copy or answer it on your computer and send the output to
your instructor. Strictly no searching for an answer online, your answer must be the reflection of
your learning about the lesson.
Furthermore, read carefully the instructions, especially in online quizzes, because it is
automatically checked by the system. You might be marked incorrect if you don’t follow the
instructions.
You can optionally share this module to your classmates or upload this online, just make
sure that it is for educational purposes and not for selling, and the credits must belong to the
author.
FOREWORD
The content of this module basically covers Science Technology and Society and how it
affected our lives. Science and Technology are two areas of study that are defined separately in
this module. Science is knowledge and Technology make life easier and improves human
condition, however there are some implications in society.
This module is dedicated to the students of DLSP and somehow this will serve as a
vehicle for enhancing their interest in learning science. It is hoped that, through this module, the
awareness and interest of the learners will guide them in seeing the relevance of their science
learning in everyday life.
The author would like to express her profound gratitude first to Almighty GOD who
provides her strength and knowledge. The institution DLSP, for providing guidelines in making
this module and for trusting her in teaching the subject.
Finally, to the critics, various authors and writers who became a source of information in
preparing this module.

INTRODUCTION
Science Technology and Society is essential to [Link] concept of it is to develop
deep appreciation and critical understanding of the role of science and technology in the
development of people and [Link] deals with the interactions between science and technology
in social, cultural, political and economic [Link] students are engaged in learning scientific
issues and technological developments.
At the end of the module, you will be able to:
1. explain the general concept related to science, technology and the scope of the
study of STS.
2. discuss the historical antecedents of science and technology across time and the
Philippines scientific and technology inventions.
3. identify the intellectual revolution that shaped society across time
4. explain the role of science and technology in nation building.
1. A SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY
Science comes from the Latin word scientia, meaning “knowledge.’ it refers to a
systematic and methodical activity of building and organizing knowledge about how the
universe behaves through observation, experimentation or both.
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to produce services,
materials, tools and machines aimed at solving real-world problems. It comes from the greek
root word techne, meaning ‘art, skill, or cunning of hand’.
Science, Technology, and Society (STS)-is a relatively young field that combines previously
independent and older disciplines, such as the history of science, philosophy of science, and
sociology of science. As an academic field, STS, according to Harvard University’s Kennedy
School(2018), traces its roots from the interwar period and the start of the Cold War. It was
during this period when historians and scientists found interest in the interconnections of
scientific knowledge, technological systems, and society. The rise of STS as an academic field
resulted from the recognition that many schools today do not really prepare students to respond
critically, reflectively, and proactively to the challenges posed by science and technology in the
contemporary world.
In general, STS applies methods drawn from history, philosophy, and sociology to study the
nature of science and technology and ultimately judge their value and place in society. As an
interdisciplinary field ,the emergence of STS was a result of questions about science and
technology’s dynamic interaction with various aspects of society and was thus viewed as a
socially embedded enterprise. Thus as the Kennedy School effectively encapsulates, STS seeks
to bridge the gap between two traditionally exclusive cultures- humanities ( interpretive) and
natural sciences (rational)- so that humans will be able to better confront the moral, ethical, and
existential dilemmas brought by the continued development in science and technology.
Activity 1
Instructions: On the space below, paste a magazine or newspaper cutout of any photograph that
depicts an issue or problem in science and technology. Then answer the questions that follow.
[Link] is the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?
-The world's poorest countries tend to have the largest family sizes and fertility rates. When people have no
economic security and cannot rely on their government and a social safety net, they often have children to ensure
they will be looked after when they are older. Where child mortality is high, there is an even greater impetus to have
more children. Those circumstances can lead in turn to a culture which values high family size.
[Link] does this particular issue or problem impact the well- being of humans today?
-While billions enjoy an affluent style, more than a tenth of the world’s population live in extreme poverty today.
Poverty is not a consequence of limited global resources, but political and economic injustice. However, the poorest
people are almost always at greatest risk from environmental damage, climate change and competition for resources.
The effects of unsustainable population hit the poorest first, and hardest.
[Link] is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially in
addressing the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?
-Technology, knowledge and science are fundamental in modern contemporary society. The understanding of how
social, cultural and material elements influence the production of new practices, new ways of understanding and
new institutions is vital in our understanding of contemporary postmodern society. Studies of technology and
science provides students with insight into how different processes of knowledge are initiated and progressed, and
how innovative technological processes are developed, employed and increase in importance.
