INTROdUCTION
The researcher is a fifth form student of Camille’s academy, who will be
gathering information on the topic “Family Issues” to present his
portfolio. All that is needed to know about domestic violence is being
contained in this SBA. Three artifacts are also including: Newspaper
article, Short story and Movies.
PlaN OF INVESTIgaTION
TOPIC: Issues in Families
SUB TOPIC: Domestic violence
The researcher shall be “investigating how domestic violence can affect a
family.” I became interested on this topic after noticing in my village that most
men abusing women are husbands and most times nothing is being done about
the violence. This SBA should inform me of actions against domestic violence. As
an English student this SBA will help to improve the researcher’s thinking skills
and analytical skills. In order to successfully complete this SBA, the researcher
shall browse the internet for information related to his topic. The researcher
intends on gathering artifacts such as newspaper articles and poem to examine
and a movie to assess for relevant information.

Unmasked by Bruk Linn
Published: October 2018
Don't believe my words;
they're lies that I fabricate to
project a perfect life and
convince you I'm okay.
Don't trust the smile you see;
it's a facade to conceal
searing pain, acute shame,
sheer heartache.
Don't get fooled by my laughter;
it is merely an echo
of hollow insides, yearning
for senses to return.
Don't get convinced by my clarity and order;
borne in attempt to
control the chaos
and pacify the storm brewing inside.
Don't be blinded by
The perfection I exude,
The courage I fake,
The innocence I feign,
The confidence I wear-
For I am broken.
REFlECTION (1) ONE
In our society Domestic violence is a pressing issue for families and married
couples. In a newspaper article, Males are Forgotten that was published January
7th, 2021 on Daily News it shows that domestic violence may lead to death or
murder surprisingly of the male. This made me feel uneasy and concerned about
the things happening in our society. However what caught my attention was a
movie called Dangerous Intentions. This movie has shown that most victims of
domestic violence but are afraid to speak out because they are wives to their
abuser. This enrages me because everyone has a right to be heard. In the last
artifact is the poem called “Unmasked”, this poem made me realize that the
world is not what it may seem. Men are not what they say to be. It made me
realize that everyone goes through pain but they hide it so well that we think
nothing at all is wrong. I am depressed to find that each artifacts supports the
claim that little or nothing is done to curb domestic violence.
REFlECTION (2) TwO
In the first artifact, the writer of the newspaper article, used Standard English along with
statistical data for example “it’s often forgotten that at least one third of all domestic violence
are reported. One third of perpetrators are caught.” This data supports my belief that most
domestic cases are unreported and thus nothing is done to the abuser and the family is left to
continue suffering. In the second article, the movie called Dangerous Intentions, there was
some abusive aural and visual imagery for example (the man was cursing his wife and beat her
till she bleed). The imagery was effective as there a lot of emotion evoked by this film. In the last
artifact, which was a poem called “Unmasked”, the language used in this was Standard English
and the tone was very much emotional for example The overload of adjectives were very
noticeable: “Don't trust the cheerful smile you see it's a facade to conceal searing pain, acute
shame, sheer heartache.” This powerfully highlights that some wives prefer to hide truth while
living in domestic violence for the sake of keeping the family together.
wRITTEN REPORT
This SBA started with our teacher explaining to us the different sections of the SBA. Once we
had fully understood this, our group members were selected and topics steamed from “Family
Issues In the 20th Century: domestic violence, financial difficulty, Divorce, Child neglect.
Discussions were made and meetings were held constantly in order for the all members to be
updated. Of fifteen artefacts, the group collectively chose three to write our report by voting.
Artifacts with the most votes are French movie call “Loveless” based on verbal abuse and found
on You Tube, and taken from Tia Paul, a newspaper article, “Males are Forgotten” that was
published January 7th, 2021 on Daily News based on domestic violence and taken from Sam
Khan and thirdly a book called “Scared” by David Watts and based on child sexual abuse and it
was chosen from Sally Chin
The first artifact, the movie “Loveless,” is based on how a married couple despised each other;
there were always conflicts in the home thus causing their ten year old son to run away. This
movie is relevant to our group’s topic because it shows that couples are verbally abusive and
fighting without even paying attention to how they affect their children. The second Artifact In
a newspaper article, “Males are Forgotten” that was published January 7 th, 2021 on Daily News
it shows that domestic violence may lead to death by murder or suicide surprisingly of the
male. Husbands/Father may sometimes feel unwanted by their families. The final artifact,
“Scared” is a really emotional book and is based on a 15 year old girl being abused by her
father, while her mom denies his action. This girl is afraid to trust anyone; for she is afraid they
will hurt her like her dad does. These three artifacts grabbed each members’ attention because
they highlight the various types of abuses that are popular issues in families all around the
world. Outcomes of our research were very positive as all members contributed to making this
report a success. Our knowledge on the topic Family Issues In the 20th Century have widened.
ORal PRESENTaTION PlaN
My name is Andrew Lim and I am a student of Camille’s Academy. For this SBA oral
presentation, I will be sharing what I have gathered during my research on domestic violence
and its effects families. I will be using a dramatic poem to share this information. My reason for
this is to make light a very disturbing occurrence of domestic violence. The dramatic poem will
consist of Standard English mixed with creole. My poem will highlight my confusion over the
fact that hurting women stay in their violent relationships and so I have included many ironies
in my poem such as “He beat her very badly and she loved him more.” Even though I am hurt
by the information collected I have incorporated rhymes that serve as serious messages in my
poem:
He wishes she knew a reason why
It hurts too much to try…
It hurts too much to try
From now until she die

REFlECTION 3 (ThREE)
While doing this SBA I personally learnt a lot; my knowledge on the topic domestic violence has
expanded. The way we were guided to conduct this SBA was profoundly successful. I say this
because the strategies I used can be of great help in my future. When it comes to working in
groups, this was basically preparing me to learn how to communicate and handle matters
properly in a group setting and this can be a helpful strategy in the world of work. Similarly,
presenting orally, helped to boost my self -confidence and also expanded my selection of
words. Lastly the planning and researching were partly difficult but soon after I grasped the
steps, everything fell in place appropriately. This SBA surly will allow me in the future to be
ready, to plan anything that is asked of me and to do same without having difficulties.
