Money Matters Squad

May 25, 2023
INTRODUCTION

The Money Matters Squad is a dedicated group focused on empowering students with
essential financial management skills. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and
tools they need to make informed financial decisions and achieve financial well-being.

In our "Mastering Money Matters: A Financial Management Workshop," our aim is to provide
students with a comprehensive understanding of key financial concepts and practical
strategies for effective money management. We strive to help students develop skills that will
serve them well throughout their lives, regardless of their financial background or future career
paths.

During the workshop, we cover various topics, including budgeting, saving, investing, debt
management, and financial goal-setting. Through interactive sessions, case studies, and real-
life examples, we engage students in meaningful discussions and activities that enhance their
financial literacy.

RATIONALE OR BACKGROUND

Financial literacy is a critical life skill that is often overlooked in traditional educational
curricula. Many young people enter adulthood without a solid understanding of personal
finance, leading to financial difficulties and missed opportunities. By providing students with a
comprehensive workshop focused on financial management, we aim to bridge this gap and
empower them to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.

The results of a study conducted by Opoku (2016) on the financial literacy of Senior High
School students in the Kumasi Metropolis revealed that these students need to improve their
understanding of personal finance. In total, they answered about 48.7% of the questions
correctly, showing that they are most experienced with understanding concepts such as simple
interest, compounding, and loan guarantee. However, they have much less knowledge of more
intricate concepts like personal financial planning, budgeting, and overdraft. These results
show that these students lack the competency necessary to make prudent financial decisions
which could lead to difficulties in the future.

The workshop recognizes that students face unique financial challenges and decisions
during their academic journey and beyond. It aims to address these challenges by providing
practical guidance, tools, and strategies that can be immediately implemented. By imparting
financial literacy, we aim to empower students to take control of their financial well-being,
regardless of their background or future career paths.

Furthermore, the workshop acknowledges the changing financial landscape and the increasing
complexity of financial products and services. Students need to navigate various financial
instruments, such as credit cards, loans, and investments, with caution and informed decision-
making. By equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills, we aim to foster
responsible financial behavior and help them avoid common pitfalls.

The workshop also recognizes that financial management is not solely about budgeting and
saving but encompasses a broader perspective on financial well-being. It covers topics such
as debt management, understanding credit scores, setting financial goals, and exploring
investment options. By providing a holistic approach to financial management, students gain a
comprehensive understanding of personal finance and are better prepared to navigate the
complexities of the financial world.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Objective of the Project

The specific objectives of our workshop include:

1. Building a strong foundation of financial literacy: We aim to ensure that students have a
solid understanding of fundamental financial concepts, such as income, expenses,
budgeting, and the importance of saving.
2. Cultivating effective money management habits: We guide students on how to create
and maintain a realistic budget, track their expenses, and develop responsible spending
habits that align with their financial goals.
3. Encouraging smart saving and investing practices: We provide insights into various
saving strategies and introduce students to the concept of investing, helping them
understand the potential benefits and risks associated with different investment options.
4. Developing strategies for debt management: We educate students on managing debt
responsibly, including understanding interest rates, repayment strategies, and the long-
term implications of borrowing.
5. Setting and achieving financial goals: We assist students in identifying their short-term
and long-term financial goals, such as saving for education, starting a business, or
planning for retirement, and guide them in creating actionable plans to achieve those
goals.

Ultimately, our aim is to empower students to take control of their financial futures, make
informed financial decisions, and build a strong foundation for financial success.

Methodology

(SHS) students in Silay City.

3. The workshop team will organize a series of interactive sessions and activities to
educate students on various aspects of financial management, including budgeting,
saving, investing, and debt management.
4. Students will actively participate in discussions, hands-on exercises, and
simulations to develop practical skills in financial decision-making and planning.
5. Throughout the workshop, students will be encouraged to apply their learning to
real-life scenarios and set personal financial goals.
6. At the conclusion of the workshop, students will receive resource materials and
tools to support their continued financial education and growth.
7. The workshop team will provide ongoing support and guidance to students as
they implement their financial plans and navigate their financial journey.
