(a) An ISA 125 x 75 x 8 mm is welded with the flange of a column ISFIB 300. The
bracket carries a factored load of 75 kN at a distance of 38 mm as shown in the
figure below. Design the connection. Use Fe410 grade steel. Flange width of
ISHB 300 = 250 mm.

reinforced with-four bars of 20 mm diameter. Determine the required vertical
shear reinforcement to resist the factored shear force of 250 kN. Consider

(c) Design a spiral column subjected to an unfactored load of 1600 kN. Effective,
length of column is 3.5 m. Use M25 grade concrete and Fe-415 grade steel and
assume moderate environment.

flow is incompressible and then determine the stream function for the flow.
(b) A reservoir has a head of 40 m and a channel leading from the reservoir permits
a flow rate of 34 m3/s. If the rotational speed of the rotor is 150 rpm, What is the
most suitable type of turbine to use?
(c) Write descriptive notes with neat sketches on:
(i) Boundary layer thickness and Hydraulic jump
(ii) Steady, non-steady, uniform and non-uniform flow
(iii) Stream lines, streak lines and path lines.

(a) The liquid limit and plastic limit of a soil are 50% and 25% respectively, when
the soil was dried from its state at plastic limit, the decrease in volume was 40%
of the volume of liquid limit. When it was dried from its state at plastic limit, the
volume decreases was 20% of the volume at plastic limit. Determine the
shrinkage limit and shrinkage ratio.
(b) A retaining wall with a smooth vertical back is 10 m high and retains a two layer
sand backfill with the following properties:
0-5 mdepth: C'=O, 4)'=30°;y 18kN/m3
below 5 rn depth: C' = 0, 4)' = 34°; 'y = 20 kN/m3
Show the active earth pressure distribution, assuming that the water table is well
below the base of the wall.

(a) Enumerate different types of foundations you would recommend under different
situations and soil conditions. Explain them briefly.
(b) Design a strip footing for a brick wall 30 cm thick and 3.5 m high above ground
level. The wall carries a super imposed load of 12 tIm run. The soil has unit
weight of 1700 kg/rn3, angle of repose of 30° and safe bearing capacity of 16
tim2. The footing may have lime concrete base, which has unit weight of 2000
kg/rn3 and modulus of rupture equal to 16 tIm2. Take the unit weight of masonry
as 1950kg/in3.

(a) For a waste water the BOD5 at 20 °C is found to be 200 mg/i. For the same waste
water, what will be BOD5 at 30 °C. The reaction constant k (to the base e) is 0.2
per day. Assume temperature coefficient (0) to be 1.047.
(b) What is mean by activated sludge ? Explain the principle involved in the sewage
purification through activated sludge process. Also discuss the methods of
aeration.
(c) Design the approximate dimensions of a set of two rapid gravity filters for
treating water required for a population of 50,000. The rate of supply being
180 //dlperson. The filters are operated to work at a filtration rate of 5000 1/hIm2.
Assume maximum daily demand to be 1.8 times the average daily demand.
Assume any other data, if required.
