Answer All Questions and Show All Working.

1) Express f (x ) = 2 x 3 + x 2 − 5 x + 2 as a product of linear factors.

2) Find the values of m for which the equation x 2 + (m + 3)x + 4m = 0 has real roots.

3) Without the use of calculators, show that
√3 − 1 √3 + 1 √2 − 1 √2 + 1

4) The polynomial f(x) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑝𝑥 2 + 𝑞𝑥 − 4 is exactly divisible by (𝑥 − 2) and leaves a
remainder of 10 when divided by (𝑥 + 1)
Find the values of the constants p and q and the factors of f (x).

5) Solve the following equation for x log 6(𝑥 + 4) + log6 (𝑥 − 1) = 1

6) The function, f, is given by f (x ) = 4 x 2 − 8 x − 3

i. Express f(x) in the form p(x + q )2 + r , where p, q, r  

ii. Hence, or otherwise, determine whether f(x) has a maximum of a minimum turning
point and state the coordinates of this point.

7) Solve the pair of simultaneous equations
