Dear Nurse Recruiter,
My name is Sydney Carskadon and I am writing in regards to the New Graduate Registered
Nurse Residency Program position with the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Oregon Health
& Sciences University. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the
University of Arizona, on track to graduate in December 2023. Throughout the duration of this
program I have gained skills and knowledge that will be invaluable to my future career as a
nurse. I look forward to returning home to Oregon and hope to have the opportunity to provide
care in my community for years to come.
During the rigorous program at the University of Arizona, I have learned how to provide the best
care possible for my patients and the importance of being their advocate. I have been fortunate
enough to experience a variety of settings while caring for a diverse population, building strong
time management and organizational skills. I will be completing a preceptorship on a telemetry
unit for a total of 180 hours, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of cardiac
diseases and EKG interpretation. My previous clinical experiences have allowed me to develop
knowledge of disease processes, pharmaceuticals, treatment protocols, and medical equipment
while becoming proficient in delivering high quality care.
My nursing skills are built on a foundation of integrity and a deep enthusiasm for healthcare. I
have often found myself in positions of leadership, whether it be academic tutoring, sports team
captain, or shift lead for past employment. I hope to continue participating in opportunities for
leadership by precepting nursing students and possibly becoming a charge nurse. The nursing
program at the University of Arizona has helped sharpen my critical thinking and problem
solving skills. I have held the position of Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Delta
Gamma sorority that gave me the ability to create a welcoming and safe community on campus,
as well as develop a deeper understanding of different cultures, sexualities, and religions.
I pride myself on having strong interpersonal skills and always acting with integrity both within
the workplace and in everyday life. These qualities along with punctuality and flexibility make
me a strong candidate for this position and I know I would excel under the guidance of the new
graduate residency program. I will be taking my NCLEX in early February 2024 and look
forward to a potential future career at OHSU. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Sydney Carskadon
