Tutorial 3

This document contains a tutorial on mechanics and kinematics, including 11 practice problems. The problems involve calculating values like time, displacement, velocity, and speed for objects in motion, such as projectiles launched at various angles, a jet plane landing, and a stunt driver jumping cars. Formulas for projectile motion are provided and applied to solve for values requested in each problem.

Tutorial 3: Translational Kinematics - Main

1. A jet plane lands on a straight runway with a speed of 100 m s–1 and can accelerate at a
maximum rate of –5.00 m s–2 as it comes to rest.

(a) From the instant the plane touches the runway, what is the time needed before
it can come to rest?

(b) Can this jet plane land on a small tropical island airport where the runway is
800 m long?
[Answer: (a) 20.0 s; (b) No]

2. While standing on a bridge 25.0 m above the ground, you drop a stone from rest. When
the stone has fallen 3.20 m, you throw a second stone straight down. What initial
velocity must you give to the second stone if they are both to reach the ground at the
same instant? [Answer: –10.1 m/s]

3. At time t = 0, a projectile is shot with a speed of 135 mis at an angle of 35.0° above the
ground. It hits a bird flying in the sky at t = 3.88 s. At t = 3.88 s, find

(i) the horizontal displacement,

(ii) the vertical displacement, and

(iii) the speed of the projectile.

[Answer: (i) 429 m, (ii) 227 m, (iii) 117 m/s]

4. An army fires a missile with a speed of 150 mis at an angle of 48.0° above the ground.
The missile reaches its maximum height of the trajectory and then, it hits on a higher
land of altitude 56.0 m.

(i) Compute the time of flight of the missile.

(ii) Determine the horizontal distance travelled by the missile.

(iii) If the target is at a horizontal distance of 3000 m away at the same altitude of
56.0 m, determine the new launching speed required to hit the target with the
other parameters such as the launching angle and the total time of flight remain
unchanged.
[Answer: (i) 22.2 s, (ii) 2.23×103 m, (iii) 202 m/s]

5. A projectile is launched with an initial speed of 60.0 m/s at an angle of 30.0° above the
horizontal. The projectile lands on a hillside 4.00 s later. Neglect air friction.

(a) What is the projectile’s velocity at the highest point of its trajectory?

(b) What is the straight-line distance from where the projectile was launched to
where it hits its target?
[Answer: (a) 52.0 m/s; (b) 212 m]

6. Figure below shows a stunt performer rides a motorcycle to jump off the ramp A at an
initial angle  = 30.0 to ramp B over a range of R with an initial velocity of
vo = 40.0 m s–1.

The maximum height of the projectile motion is H and the distance between ramp A
and ramp B is R.
Ignore friction and air drag, and assume the projectile motion to be symmetrical.
v sin 2  o
2

(a) Prove that the maximum height, H = o .

2g
(b) Calculate the maximum height H.
vo sin 2 o
2

(c) Prove that the distance between ramp A and B, R = .

g
(d) Calculate the range R.
[Answer: (b) 20.4 m; (d) 141m]

Tutorial 3: Translational Kinematics - Extra

7. A student throws a water balloon vertically downward from the top of a building. The
balloon leaves the thrower’s hand with a speed of 6.00 m/s. Air resistance may be
ignored, so the water balloon is in free fall after it leaves the thrower’s hand.

(a) What is its speed after falling for 2.00 s?

(b) How far does it fall in 2.00 s?

(c) What is the speed after falling 10.0 m?

(d) Sketch ay-t, vy-t, and sy-t graphs for the motion.
[Answer: (a) 25.6 m/s; (b) 31.6 m; (c) 15.2 m/s]

8. A projectile is launched from ground level at an angle of 15.0° above the horizontal. It
returns to ground level. To what value should the launch angle be adjusted, without
changing the launch speed, so that the range doubles?
[Answer: 45.0°]

9. A rock is thrown upward from the level ground in such a way that the maximum height,
H of its flight is equal to its horizontal range, R.

(a) At what angle  is the rock thrown?

(b) Would your answer to part (a) be different on a different planet?

[Answer: (a) 76.0°; (b) No]

10. Figure below shows a 2.00 m tall basketball player is standing on the floor 10.0 m from
the basket where the height of the basket is 3.05 m.

If he shoots the ball at a 40.0° angle with the horizontal, at what initial speed must he
throw the basketball so that it goes through the hoop without striking the backboard?
[Answer: 10.7 m/s]

11. A stunt driver wants to make his car jump over eight cars parked side by side below a
horizontal ramp as shown in figure below.

(a) The vertical height of the ramp is 1.50 m above the cars, and the horizontal
distance he must clear is 20.0 m.

(i) How long will it take for the car to fall 1.50 m.

(ii) With what minimum speed must he drive off the horizontal ramp?

(b) If the ramp is now tilted upward, so that the “takeoff angle” is 10.0° above the
horizontal, what is the new minimum speed?
[Answer: (a) (i) 0.553 s, 36.2 m/s; (b) 20.1 m/s]
