Week 3 - Speaking FCE Part 2

Martyna compares two photographs showing different free time activities. In the first photo, children are playing soccer in the park, which provides exercise, fun socializing, and breaks down gender boundaries. In the second photo, girls are chatting in a cafe, allowing them to communicate, relax, and enjoy friendship. Martyna says both activities benefit the people by helping them relax, spend time with friends, and discuss problems.

WEEK 3
SPEAKING PART 2 FCE – FREE TIME

Now, look at the examiner’s instructions and the question and photos below.
“Here are your photographs. They
show people doing different
activities in their free time. I’d like
you to compare the photographs,
and say how you think the people
can benefit from spending their
free time doing these different
activities.”

This is the answer of the candidate called Martyna:

Martyna: “Well, in the first photo, there’s a group of children, both boys and girls, playing
football together in the park. They don’t seem to be taking the game too seriously and they
seem to be enjoying themselves. I think they benefit from this in several ways. Firstly,
they’re getting some exercise, which is always good for you because it’s great for your health
1
and helps you to relax. At the same time, they’re having fun together, which is important
because it builds up their social relationships and their friendships. Also, it’s good to see
boys and girls doing a bit of sport together instead of separately, because I think it helps
break down social boundaries between boys and girls.
In the second photo, there are four girls chatting together in a café and laughing. They
aren’t so active as the children in the first photo because they’re not doing a sport, but they
are probably communicating more and sharing their ideas and experiences. I think they
also benefit because they can talk about their problems, relax and also enjoy their
friendship. Mm, all in all, I think they get a lot from both activities.”
Task 1: Tick this checklist.

V. PRACTICE:
Task 6: These photographs show people exercising. Compare the photographs and
say how the exercising might make people feel.
How might the exercising make people feel?

Sample answer: “The right photo shows a girl on a river bank doing what
looks like gymnastics, while in the left picture, a lady is in the middle of a
tennis match. Both do some kind of sports activity, however, one is
performed outside while the other is done indoors. Moreover, tennis
requires special equipment such as a racket, while the other exercise
doesn’t need anything at all.
I believe that both people feel content with what they’re doing as
exercising energises you, and if you spend enough time at it, you might feel
pleasantly exhausted. It is also beneficial for your brain, allowing your
mind to wander.”
Your answer: In the first picture, I see a girl playing tennis. Whereas in the
second photo, I see a girl doing yoga or doing some exercise on the river
bank. In the both pictures, we can see both girls participating in sports
activities. However, one is performed outside while the other is done indoors.
Moreover, tennis requires special equipment such as a racket, while the other
exercise doesn’t need anything. I believe both of them feeling happy,
confident, have less anxiety and stress, and have less physical pain.

Task 7: The photographs show people doing different free-time
activities. Compare the photographs, and say what you think the
people enjoy about doing these different activities.
Your answer: In the first picture, I can see a boy playing a simulation game
in class, behind him are his classmates. Whereas in the second photo, I see a
woman skydiving, it's an extreme sport. In both photos, we can see both of
them happy and excited whether alone or with friends. While, the first photo's
scene is in a room, in contrast to the second photo the scene takes place in the
air. I believe they like to find new sensations and experience more and they
want to find special moments when doing these different activities.
